1 of Netflix’s Most Expensive Movies Ever Is Red Notice & It Finally Lost the #1 Spot on the Streaming Charts

It took four years, but Red Notice is no longer the most popular movie on Netflix. The 2021 action comedy movie starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds has just been kicked out of the top spot by the worldwide sensation KPop Demon Hunters.

From November 2021 to August 2025, Red Notice was the No. 1 most-viewed movie ever on Netflix, having attracted 230.9 million global views within its first 91 days of release on the platform. However, after almost four years, Red Notice has been dethroned by the animated movie KPop Demon Hunters, which has amassed 236 million views since its debut on Netflix on June 20.

If that’s not enough to prove how popular KPop Demon Hunters has been on Netflix, the movie’s sing-along version also earned an estimated $18 million at the domestic box office during a two-day stint in theaters, enough to take the top spot at the box office this past weekend. Furthermore, KPop Demon Hunters still has just under a month to go until Netflix stops counting its views for its Most Popular Movies chart, meaning that its final view total will likely be much larger than 236 million.

Red Notice Can Reclaim the Top Spot With a Sequel

Since Red Notice cannot reclaim the top spot from KPop Demon Hunters, the only way for the heist franchise to return to No. 1 is through a sequel. Luckily for fans of the 2021 movie, two sequels have been in development at Netflix since 2022, with Rawson Marshall Thurber returning as writer and director. Johnson, Reynolds, and Gadot are also expected to reprise their respective roles as John Hurtley, Nolan Booth, and Sarah Black.

The sequels are also expected to feature several new cast members, with the idea being for Red Notice 2 and 3 to feature a large ensemble similar to the Ocean’s franchise. However, there hasn’t been much movement on the sequels in the three years since they were announced, casting doubt over whether the trilogy will actually be completed. In November 2023, former Netflix executive Scott Stuber stated that the streamer wanted “to get it right” with Red Notice 2, although he hoped for the sequel to enter production by late 2024, which has come and gone. With Gadot’s star power having faded significantly since 2021 and Johnson shifting his career to more character-driven projects than blockbuster fare, it’s unclear if the Red Notice sequels will ever get made.

As for KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix and Sony are working to close a deal to develop several follow-up projects, which look to include two sequels, a television series, a short film, and a stage musical. Hopefully, for the sake of the fans, the KPop Demon Hunters follow-ups won’t suffer the same fate as the Red Notice sequels and get stuck in development hell.

Red Notice and KPop Demon Hunters are available to stream on Netflix.
