1 of the Most Iconic Creature Features in Monster Movie History Is Coming to Peacock
One of the most underrated Universal Pictures monster mash-up movies is heading to Peacock as its new streaming home.
Universal Pictures’ 1943 classic Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman is officially about to be added to the Peacock streaming library. Fans will be able to stream Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman on Peacock beginning Sept. 1.
Directed by Roy William Neill from a screenplay by Curt Siodmak, Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman follows the events of both 1941’s The Wolf Man and 1942’s The Ghost of Frankenstein, albeit with several retcons to both being made along the way. Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman stars Universal horror icons Lon Chaney Jr. and Bela Lugosi in reprisals of their iconic roles of Lawrence Stewart Talbot, aka The Wolf Man, and Frankenstein’s Monster, respectively. When grave robbers remove the wolfsbane from Talbot’s tomb, Larry is brought roaring back to life, only to once again seek some manner of ending his immortal curse. Along the way, Talbot crosses paths with the Monster, in whom he finds both a kindred spirit and relentless rival.
Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman was met with a lukewarm response at best from most critics at the time of its release, many of whom noted that they simply couldn’t take the film’s plot seriously. Others regarded the film’s tone, as standard as it was for a Universal horror feature at the time, as a testament to the strengths not just of Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman in particular, but to of the genre as a whole. Although Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman only holds a 25% “Fresh” rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes’ “Tomatometer,” the site’s audience-generated “Popcornmeter” score stands at a substantially higher 55% approval rating.

While Universal Pictures is still working towards a cohesive vision for its iconic monsters, at least one of those same characters is headed back to the silver screen courtesy of acclaimed maestro of horror Guillermo del Toro’s next feature film – Frankenstein. Set to premiere on October 17, Frankenstein stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as the Monster, Christoph Waltz as Victor’s wealthy patron Henrich Harlander, Burn Gorman as Victor’s assistant Fritz, and Mia Goth as Victor’s fiancee, Elizabeth Lavenza. The film’s core cast also includes appearances form Felix Kammerer, Lauren Collins, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Charles Dance, and Ralph Ineson.
Guillermo del Toro recently discussed the film’s tone and themes, noting that, while “[Boris] Karloff looms eternal. Bernie [Wrightston] looms eternal. But we are not doing Karloff and we’re not doing Bernie, and we’re not doing Mary [Shelley].” Del Toro continued, “This is, for me, the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life… Monsters have become my personal belief system. There are strands of Frankenstein throughout my films — Cronos, Blade, Hellboy, big time on Pinocchio… Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son, has consumed my stores again and again. I wanted to make this film before even I had a camera, and I’ve been actively pursuing it now for over 25 years. It has grown so close to me that now it’s biography.”
Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman will be available for streaming on Peacock beginning Sept. 1.
