13 joyfully creative pictures from Birmingham Weekender featuring music, dance and theatre

Birmingham Weekender returned with a joyful explosion of music, dance and theatre in Bullring and the city centre this August Bank Holiday.

Across three jam-packed days, more than 120,000 people experienced the vibrant programme of free events and installations in Birmingham.

From high-flying performances and surprise flash mobs to stilt-walking jellyfish and vibrant processions the entertainment kept on coming.

Festival highlights include:

  • Weekender Carnival’s colourful dance and music extravaganza by ACE Dance and Music kicking off the festival, bringing the city to life.

  • Autin Dance Theatre’s Up in the Sky, a jaw-dropping aerial adventure, captivating audiences above Rotunda Square.

  • Sound de Secà’s interactive procession, Possê filling the streets with percussion, dance, theatre, and song.

  • Stilt-walking jellyfish and tropical birds delighting passersby with playful interactions and fun photo opportunities.

  • Audiences experiencing A Place Between Mass and Echoes by Inviktus Collective, a living, breathing ritual fusing street dance, rollerskating, live DJing and circus.

  • The Hippodrome Young Dancers Showcase captivating audiences with high-energy performances from 24 dancers aged 16–24, alongside spoken word artist, Sipho Eric Ndlovu.

  • Dance Flashmobs from Marshon Dance Company surprising and thrilling passersby at New Street Station.

  • Festivalgoers co-creating the Brum in Colour mural – a vibrant, hand-drawn illustration of Birmingham by local artist Layla Sadiq.
