We hear plenty about celebrities’ big career moves, lavish lifestyles, and the occasional internet-breaking scandal, but what about the good they do when nobody’s paying attention? Some stars have quietly donated millions, helped people through unimaginable circumstances, and even built entire organizations to make life a little easier for others, without making a huge song and dance about it. I went looking for some of these stories, and these celebrities deserve a whole lot more recognition for what they’ve done.
Here are 16 celebrities who have done some genuinely amazing things for others, and you might not even know about half of them.
1. Christian Bale may have hung up his Batsuit in 2012, but he’s been doing some pretty incredible superhero work in real life. Back in 2008, after learning how frequently siblings are separated when they enter foster care, he knew he wanted to do something about it. Rather than just donating to a charity and calling it a day, he helped bring an entire community to life where foster children could grow up alongside their brothers and sisters.

Alongside his wife, Sibi, and other collaborators, he spent nearly 18 years creating Together California, a $22 million foster-care village in Palmdale, California, designed to keep brothers and sisters together. In September 2026, that dream finally became a reality when the village officially opened. The community features 12 furnished homes designed to accommodate up to 72 foster children and their caregivers, a community center offering support services, and two studio apartments for young adults transitioning out of foster care. It will also provide programs focused on stability, care, and helping children feel a sense of belonging.

The project is especially significant considering that Los Angeles County has more than 30,000 children in its foster care system.
Organizers have confirmed that the village is expected to welcome its first residents this month, October 2026. Speaking to ABC7, Bale summed up the heart behind the entire project, saying, “It’s our job to turn their heartbreak and their pain into love and hope and a sense of future.”

2. We may have lost the legendary Dolly Parton recently, but the incredible amount of good she did throughout her life will continue to make a difference for generations to come. While the world knew and loved her for her music, larger-than-life personality, and iconic sense of humor, there’s a whole other side to her legacy that I think deserves just as much recognition.
David Becker / Getty Images
In 1995, Dolly founded the Imagination Library, a program that sends free, age-appropriate books to children from birth until they turn five, regardless of their family’s income. What started as a small initiative in her home county in Tennessee eventually expanded to five countries. By June 2026, the program had gifted more than 325 million books to children around the world. Yes, 325 MILLION!

The reason she started it in the first place is genuinely touching. Dolly’s father never had the opportunity to learn to read or write, something she said held him back despite being one of the smartest people she knew. She wanted to honor him by making sure other children had access to books from an early age. Speaking to PJ Library in 2023, she revealed that before her father passed away, he told her he was prouder of the Imagination Library than anything else she’d accomplished. But her generosity went far beyond encouraging children to read. Following the devastating Tennessee wildfires in 2016, she established the My People Fund to provide financial assistance to families who had lost their homes. She also donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2020 to support COVID-19 research that contributed to the development of Moderna’s vaccine, followed by another $1 million in 2022 toward pediatric infectious disease research.

3. As if we needed another reason to love Keanu Reeves, it turns out that the actor has also been quietly supporting children’s hospitals and cancer research behind the scenes.
Katie Flores / Variety via Getty Images
In a 2009 interview with Ladies’ Home Journal, Reeves revealed that he had established a private charitable foundation to support children’s hospitals and cancer research. But unlike many celebrity-led charities, he deliberately kept his name out of its activities. As he explained, “I don’t like to attach my name to it; I just let the foundation do what it does.” His commitment to cancer research also has a deeply personal connection. His younger sister, Kim Reeves, battled leukemia, and Keanu reportedly supported her throughout her treatment.

Also, his efforts didn’t stop with the foundation. In 2008, Reeves participated in the televised Stand Up To Cancer fundraiser, taking calls to help raise money for cancer research. Then, in 2020, he auctioned off a 15-minute Zoom date with himself to benefit Camp Rainbow Gold, an Idaho-based charity supporting children affected by cancer. Bidding reportedly reached $16,600. And in 2023, he put up for auction a signed John Wick: Chapter 4 training uniform to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

4. Denzel Washington is one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, but here’s something you might not know: He once quietly helped pay for Chadwick Boseman’s acting education, long before Boseman became Black Panther.
Frazer Harrison / WireImage
Back in 1998, Boseman was studying at Howard University when he and eight other theater students were accepted into a prestigious summer acting program at the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England. However, the students needed financial assistance to attend. That’s when their professor, actress Phylicia Rashad, reached out to some of her Hollywood connections for help. Washington agreed to contribute toward the students’ tuition, without making a big public announcement about it. Boseman later revealed that he only learned who had helped fund his education after receiving a letter naming Washington as his benefactor. He kept the story to himself for years before finally sharing it publicly in 2018.

Then, in 2019, when Washington was honored with the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award, Boseman took the stage to personally thank the man who had helped make that opportunity possible. During his emotional tribute, he declared, “There is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington.”
5. You probably remember Gary Sinise as Lieutenant Dan from Forrest Gump, but what you might not know is that he’s spent decades helping real-life military veterans, wounded service members, first responders, and their families.
Noam Galai / Getty Images
In 2011, Gary Sinise founded the Gary Sinise Foundation to support military veterans, first responders, and their families. One of its biggest initiatives is the R.I.S.E. (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment) program, which builds mortgage-free homes for severely wounded veterans and first responders. These aren’t just regular houses, either. Each one is adapted to the recipient’s specific needs, with things like wider hallways, accessible bathrooms, and modified kitchens to make everyday life a little easier. By July 2025, the foundation had provided 100 of these homes, giving 100 individuals and families a place designed to help them regain some independence.
The foundation’s work goes beyond housing, too. Its Snowball Express program brings together children and surviving spouses of fallen military personnel and first responders, giving families who have experienced similar losses a chance to connect. This includes annual trips to Walt Disney World, where families can spend time together away from the everyday challenges of grief. In December 2025, more than 1,600 children and surviving spouses or guardians of fallen military members attended its five-day holiday retreat. The foundation also helps provide mobility devices, adapted vehicles, mental health support, and other resources for veterans and first responders.

Sinise’s work with veterans began long before he established his foundation. He has long supported military communities through charity initiatives, concerts, and visits with service members. For him, the work comes down to a simple belief: “While we can never do enough for our nation’s heroes, we can always do a little more.”

6. Imagine being so committed to a cause that you’d sell not one, but TWO of your own houses to keep it going. Well, that’s exactly what Michael Sheen did in 2019 when the Homeless World Cup, an international football tournament for people who have experienced homelessness or social exclusion, was at risk of being canceled due to a funding shortfall.
Dave Benett / Jed Cullen/Dave Benett/Getty Images
The actor sold his homes in Los Angeles and Wales and put his own money toward making sure the event could still take place. Speaking to The Big Issue in 2021, Sheen explained that the experience completely changed how he viewed his finances and career. He said, “I’ve essentially turned myself into a social enterprise, a not-for-profit actor.” He also admitted that selling his homes had left him with financial obligations that would take years to pay off, but he remained committed to using his earnings to support causes he believed in.

Sheen has also used his own money to help people get back on their feet. In March 2025, he revealed that he’d spent £100,000 to help clear around £1 million in debt owed by roughly 900 people in South Wales. He did this by buying up bundles of debt at a fraction of their original value and then wiping them out, meaning hundreds of people no longer had to worry about paying those debts. He’s also put money toward education, pledging £50,000 over five years to a bursary that helps Welsh students attend the University of Oxford. Between the debt relief and the scholarship support, I think he’s found some pretty tangible ways to help people who could use a break.

7. Jon Bon Jovi has spent his career feeding people’s souls with his music, but did you know he’s also been helping feed people who can’t afford a meal? And we’re not talking about a one-time charity dinner. Alongside his wife, Dorothea, the rock star has helped establish a network of community restaurants where people can sit down for a proper three-course meal, even if they don’t have the money to pay for it.
Samir Hussein / Samir Hussein/WireImage for ABA
It all began in 2011, when the couple opened the first JBJ Soul Kitchen in Red Bank, New Jersey, through the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation. The idea, which originally came from Dorothea, was to create a restaurant where people experiencing food insecurity could enjoy the same dining experience as paying customers, without feeling singled out because of their financial circumstances. Here’s how it works. There are no prices on the menu. Instead, customers who can afford to pay are encouraged to make a donation and contribute a little extra to cover someone else’s meal. Those who can’t afford to pay are still welcome to enjoy a three-course meal and are invited to participate in volunteer opportunities, such as helping around the restaurant.
Since opening its first restaurant, JBJ Soul Kitchen has grown into something much bigger. By May 2026, it had served more than 275,000 meals across four New Jersey locations, including a temporary pop-up, according to the James Beard Foundation. But food is just one part of the work Jon Bon Jovi and his wife, Dorothea Hurley, have taken on. Through the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, which they established in 2006, they’ve also supported affordable housing projects and initiatives tackling homelessness and poverty across several states.

8. Between building a billion-dollar beauty empire, releasing chart-topping music, and becoming a fashion icon, Rihanna has also used her success to support causes far beyond the entertainment industry. I think a lot of people know she’s involved in charity work, but the amount she’s done through her foundation might genuinely surprise you.
SUJIT JAISWAL / AFP via Getty Images
In 2012, Rihanna established the Clara Lionel Foundation, named after her grandparents, Clara and Lionel Braithwaite, to support healthcare, education, and communities affected by natural disasters. One of its earliest projects was a $1.75 million investment in cancer treatment equipment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in her home country of Barbados. The hospital’s Clara Braithwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine was named in honor of her grandmother, who died of cancer. Her foundation’s work goes well beyond emergency relief, too. It’s funded scholarships for students from the Caribbean and Latin America, helped girls in Malawi access education, and provided schools in Barbados with technology, learning materials, and meal programs. The foundation has also supported efforts to make schools and healthcare facilities across the Caribbean better prepared for hurricanes and other natural disasters.

In 2022, Rihanna’s foundation teamed up with Jack Dorsey’s philanthropic initiative, #StartSmall, to put $15 million toward grassroots organizations fighting for climate justice across the US and the Caribbean. The funding went toward communities that are often hit hardest by climate change, including island nations and communities of color. By the time the Clara Lionel Foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary that year, it had already awarded more than $100 million in grants. I don’t think people always realize just how much goes into this side of her work, especially when she’s so often in the headlines for music, beauty, and fashion.

9. John Mayer has made a career out of putting feelings into words and music, but one experience led him to take on a very different kind of project. During a visit to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, he spoke with wounded service members and learned about the challenges they face long after leaving the military. The conversations stayed with him, and he spent the next eight years working with veterans and researchers before officially launching his Heart and Armor Foundation in 2019.

One of the biggest issues he encountered was the stigma surrounding veterans seeking help, particularly for mental health concerns. Speaking to PEOPLE, Mayer explained that the problem went both ways. “The first one is how veterans feel about getting care, and the other one is how civilians feel about what veterans must be thinking. And you have to sort of bridge these two worlds and help each other tell the truth about this thing.” Through Heart and Armor, Mayer has worked with scientists, healthcare professionals, and veterans to fund research and develop programs addressing the physical and psychological effects of military service.

I’ve found that the work has led to some pretty significant results. According to the foundation, its efforts have helped generate $13 million in research funding, contributed to 25 studies published in scientific journals, and supported programs designed to improve veterans’ health and well-being. Mayer has also been open about what pushed him to get involved. In a personal note on the foundation’s website, he explained, “I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best way to ‘support the troops’ with real action instead of platitudes… But I also hope this foundation helps people look a little closer; we can all do a better job of sharing the burden.”
10. Chance the Rapper has made a name for himself in the music industry, but he’s also invested in the city where he grew up. In 2016, he co-founded SocialWorks, a nonprofit organization based in his hometown of Chicago, with the mission of empowering young people through arts, education, and civic engagement. Since its founding, the organization has launched several initiatives to support students, families, and people experiencing homelessness.

One of its programs, Warmest Winter, provides clothing, essential supplies, and other resources to people experiencing homelessness through donations and community events. Another initiative, My State of Mind, focuses on mental health by connecting people with wellness professionals and support services. Meanwhile, the New Chance: Arts & Literature Fund has worked with Chicago Public Schools to expand access to arts education, providing grants directly to school principals. According to SocialWorks, the initiative has raised more than $5 million to support public schools.

That’s not all. Through OpenMike, a monthly event organized in partnership with the Chicago Public Library, high school students have the chance to take the stage, perform, and share their creative work with an audience. His organization also supports Kids of the Kingdom, a faith-based summer day camp that’s been around since 1978 and gives children a chance to explore everything from performing arts to creative writing. Chance has made a name for himself in music, but he’s also helping the next generation find their own voice. Turns out, he’s giving Chicago’s kids more than just a chance.

11. Cyndi Lauper may be best known for singing “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” but she’s also worked to ensure vulnerable young people have a safe place to call home. In 2008, the singer co-founded True Colors United, formerly known as the True Colors Fund, an organization dedicated to addressing youth homelessness, particularly among LGBTQ+ young people who face additional challenges and discrimination.
Frazer Harrison / Getty Images for RRHOF
Through the organization, Lauper has helped support initiatives that provide free training and resources to shelters and service providers so they can better meet the needs of LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness. True Colors United also advocates for funding and policies that support homeless young people and works to ensure that those who have experienced homelessness have a say in developing solutions. The organization focuses on changing how young people are supported and treated when they seek help.
When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, Cyndi Lauper found a way to put her music-inspired activism to work. In October that year, she launched the Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights Fund in partnership with the Tides Foundation to support organizations protecting access to abortion and reproductive healthcare. The name was a clever twist on her hit song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” inspired by a slogan that had appeared on protest signs during the 2017 Women’s March. We see what you did there, Cyndi, and we’re soooo here for it!

12. Matt Damon has built a career playing some pretty unforgettable characters, but one of his most important roles has nothing to do with Hollywood. For nearly two decades, he’s been working to improve access to clean drinking water and safe sanitation for people who don’t have the luxury of taking either for granted.
Michael Buckner / Variety via Getty Images
In 2009, Damon teamed up with water and sanitation expert Gary White to co-found Water.org, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving access to safe drinking water and sanitation worldwide. The organization works with local financial institutions to offer small, affordable loans that help families install water connections, build toilets, and improve sanitation facilities in their homes. According to Water.org, its work has helped more than 50 million people across 11 countries gain access to safe water and sanitation.
Bryan Bedder / Getty Images for Bloomberg Philanthropies
Damon’s interest in the issue goes back to a trip to Zambia in 2006, where he accompanied a teenage girl on her daily journey to collect water. During their walk, she told him about her dreams of moving to the city and becoming a nurse, reminding him of the excitement he and Ben Affleck had felt as teenagers when they dreamed of becoming actors. But it wasn’t until afterward that Damon realized just how different her life could have been without access to clean water nearby. Speaking to TIME in 2022, he explained, “Had it not been for the foresight of someone to drill a well a mile from her home, she wouldn’t have been in school, and she wouldn’t have had dreams of moving to the big city someday and becoming a nurse.”
©Miramax / courtesy Everett Collection
Damon and White also released a book in 2022, The Worth of Water: Our Story of Chasing Solutions to the World’s Greatest Challenge, documenting their experiences and the work they’ve done to address the global water crisis.

13. For Miley Cyrus, helping young people who feel rejected, unsupported, or forgotten has been a cause close to her heart for a long time. In 2015, she founded the Happy Hippie Foundation to support homeless and LGBTQ+ youth, partly inspired by the death of transgender teenager Leelah Alcorn, whose story highlighted the discrimination and hardships many transgender young people face.
Kevin Mazur / Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Atlantic Records
Through Happy Hippie, Cyrus has worked to connect vulnerable young people with support services, education, and employment opportunities. The foundation’s work also extends to young adults aging out of foster care, people living with HIV/AIDS, and communities affected by humanitarian crises. And according to the organization, Cyrus privately funds its operating expenses, meaning 100% of public donations go directly toward supporting its programs and the people they serve. In fact, Miley was drawing attention to youth homelessness even before launching the foundation. At the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, when she won Video of the Year for Wrecking Ball, she asked Jesse Helt, a young man who had experienced homelessness, to accept the award on her behalf. Instead of delivering the usual celebrity acceptance speech, Helt used the opportunity to speak about the struggles of homeless young people in America.
When Helt subsequently faced public criticism over his criminal history, Miley defended him, writing, “Young people should be able to enjoy their youth without worrying where their next meal is coming from.” She also urged people to look beyond someone’s past before rushing to judgment. In 2015, she took things a step further by launching the Happy Hippie Backyard Sessions, a series of musical performances featuring artists like Ariana Grande and Joan Jett to raise awareness and support for the foundation’s work.

14. Alicia Keys was just 20 when a trip to South Africa completely changed the way she looked at the world. While visiting the country with MTV’s Staying Alive program, she met women living with HIV/AIDS, including pregnant women and new mothers who couldn’t afford the medication they desperately needed.
Phillip Faraone / Getty Images for Toei Animation Inc.
Speaking to PEOPLE in 2019, Keys recalled, “How can something be available, but you can’t have it because you’re poor?” She explained that witnessing the situation firsthand left her outraged and determined to do something about it. “When I came back, I was never the same,” she said. That experience eventually led her to co-found Keep a Child Alive in 2003, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and families affected by HIV/AIDS. The organization works with local communities to improve access to treatment, prevention, and essential healthcare services, particularly in areas where poverty and limited resources make receiving medical care difficult.
Kevin Mazur/Child2014 / WireImage
15. Ariana Grande has been donating to charities and supporting at-risk communities for a while, but in June 2026, she decided to bring those efforts together under one roof. The singer launched the Brighter Days Ahead Foundation, an organization that provides funding to smaller nonprofits working on everything from LGBTQ+ rights and mental health to emergency relief.
Kevin Mazur / Kevin Mazur/Getty Images
Ariana Grande’s foundation is built around four funds, each focused on a different cause. The Protect & Defend Fund backs organizations working on LGBTQ+, civil, and reproductive rights, while the Heal & Dream Fund focuses on mental health services. The Seen & Celebrated Fund helps amplify LGBTQ+ voices and stories, and the Emergency Support Fund steps in to help communities facing urgent crises. I think it’s interesting how the foundation covers everything from fighting for people’s rights to helping them through some of the hardest moments of their lives.
Grande’s support for these causes, however, predates the foundation by years. According to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, she’d made annual donations to Manchester’s Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and anonymously supported a holiday gift drive for transgender young people. In 2022, she also helped launch a $3 million fundraising initiative for transgender youth.

16. When Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, he was just 29 years old and one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. He kept his diagnosis private for seven years before revealing it publicly in 1998. However, rather than simply sharing his own experience with the disease, he went on to establish an organization dedicated to finding better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
Rich Polk / Variety via Getty Images
In 2000, the Back to the Future star launched The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which has since become one of the world’s leading nonprofit funders of Parkinson’s research. The foundation supports scientists working to understand the disease, develop new treatments, and identify ways to detect it earlier, with the aim of improving life for the millions of people affected by Parkinson’s. The scale of the effort is pretty staggering. The foundation has funded billions of dollars in research since its establishment, supporting projects ranging from drug development to large-scale studies involving people living with Parkinson’s.
Jamie McCarthy / WireImage
One particularly significant breakthrough came in 2023, when researchers supported by the foundation announced a method of detecting abnormal alpha-synuclein proteins, which are associated with Parkinson’s, in spinal fluid. The discovery could help researchers identify the disease earlier and develop more targeted treatments. Fox has also pushed to make patients an active part of the research process. Speaking to AARP in 2021, he explained, “We created what has become this giant network of patients, scientists and institutions.” Although Fox announced in 2020 that he was stepping away from regular acting work because of the challenges of Parkinson’s, he has continued advocating for research and raising awareness through his foundation.
