18.5 kg tumour removed from patient’s uterus at private hospital in Delhi

Doctors at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital removed an 18.5 kg fibroid uterus, a tumour, from a 56-year-old woman on Tuesday. The woman was suffering for six years with multiple fibroids, one of which had expanded her abdomen, causing discomfort in day-to-day activities, restricted mobility, and pressure on surrounding organs.

The surgery was led by Dinesh Kansal, senior director and head of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Laparoscopic Surgery, along with a multidisciplinary team from urology, anaesthesia, and critical care.

Dr. Kansal provided details about the case, stating that meticulous planning was necessary before the surgery. “The benign fibroid (noncancerous tumour) had grown so large that it started pressing against nearby organs, including the intestine, bladder, and ureter. Her internal anatomy was severely distorted, and key organs were closely adherent to the fibroid. The patient also had internal scarring from previous surgeries, which made the procedure more complex,” he said.

The patient was discharged on the fourth day after surgery and has since made a full recovery, resuming a comfortable and active lifestyle.
