Pianist James Fernando Returns for Music from Poplar Hill Concert

The Music from Poplar Hill series is set to kick off its 2024-2025 season with a performance by the James Fernando Trio on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held at St. George’s Episcopal Church, located at 19167 Poplar Hill Lane in Valley Lee, Maryland, just a short 15-minute drive from Leonardtown.

James Fernando, a critically acclaimed jazz pianist from Philadelphia, will be returning to Music from Poplar Hill after his 2022 performance was met with resounding praise and a standing ovation. This time, Fernando will be accompanied by Kyon Williams on drums and Sam Harris on bass, adding a new dynamic to the upcoming performance.

Fernando’s talent has been recognized by numerous publications, with World Music Report describing him as a “prodigiously gifted composer and virtuoso pianist,” Jazz Sensibilities praising his “limitless ability to articulate his ideas,” and Contemporary Fusion Reviews calling his work “one of the most amazing musical experiences you’ve ever had.”

Tickets for the event are on sale now through the Music from Poplar Hill website (www.musicfrompoplarhill.org). Due to limited space, attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets early. The performance will feature open seating, and concert-goers are invited to arrive as early as 6:00 p.m. to explore the scenic church grounds. Guests are welcome to bring picnics and enjoy the surroundings while mingling with fellow music enthusiasts.

In addition to the public performance, the James Fernando Trio will also participate in educational programming as part of the series’ commitment to youth outreach. On Thursday, September 26, local school students will visit St. George’s Episcopal Church for a special concert tailored to young listeners. The following morning, on Friday, September 27, the trio will visit a St. Mary’s County public school to engage with students in an educational setting. These events are either free or provided at a minimal cost to ensure accessibility to all students.

Music from Poplar Hill has a longstanding commitment to supporting youth-oriented programming. “Educational events are offered free of charge or at minimal cost to student participants,” according to the series organizers. Guest artists regularly provide educational outreach in conjunction with their Friday evening performances, aiming to inspire the next generation of musicians.

The Music from Poplar Hill series, officially titled Music from Poplar Hill: The Jo Ricks Music Series, was created to bring a diverse array of acclaimed artists to Southern Maryland. The series not only offers affordable live performances but also provides educational opportunities for young audiences in the area.

“We’re excited to add to the cultural offerings in Southern Maryland with Music from Poplar Hill: The Jo Ricks Music Series,” said Eliza Garth, the series’ Artistic Director. “Residents here can enjoy the talents of established artists from nearby cultural centers, right here in our community. And, of course, we welcome concert-goers from surrounding counties and the wider region to visit St. Mary’s County, attend our events, and discover the geographical beauty and friendly vibe we offer.”

Named in honor of Jo Ricks, a prominent figure in the Southern Maryland and Washington, D.C. communities, the series aims to foster community connections through the power of music. Ricks was known for her ability to unite people through music, and the series was established with the belief that music can nourish the spirit, enrich lives, and strengthen the community.

The James Fernando Trio performance is expected to draw attendees from across the region, with both locals and visitors alike anticipating a captivating evening of jazz. With Fernando’s impressive reputation and the scenic setting of St. George’s Episcopal Church, the concert promises to be a highlight of the fall music season.
