UP has sold over 2 lakh EVs this year, with majority being three-wheelers

What’s the story

As the world celebrates World Electric Vehicle (EV) Day today, it’s worth noting that India is rapidly advancing toward electrification.

The government’s initiatives are significantly driving the growth of EVs in the country’s automotive sector.

Among all Indian states, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a leader with over two lakh registered electric vehicles in 2024.

A significant number of these are three-wheelers, demonstrating a strong preference for this type of EV among residents.

Maharashtra and Karnataka follow suit

Maharashtra is closely trailing Uttar Pradesh with more than 1.26 lakh registered EVs.

The state’s policies have created a favorable environment for the early adoption of these battery-operated vehicles.

Additionally, Maharashtra is becoming an EV manufacturing hub, attracting companies like Tata Motors and Mahindra Electric.

Karnataka has also made significant strides in promoting electric mobility with over 99,000 vehicles sold this year alone.

Tamil Nadu and Bihar join the EV race

Tamil Nadu is not only encouraging EV adoption but also emerging as a leader in EV manufacturing. The state has sold close to 73,900 vehicles this year.

This dual strategy of promoting use while becoming a manufacturing hub has positioned Tamil Nadu strongly in India’s EV landscape.

Meanwhile, Bihar has made significant progress with over 65,000 electric vehicles sold in 2024 alone, the majority being three-wheelers.

Goa leads in EV penetration

When it comes to EV penetration relative to population, Goa takes the lead with electric vehicles accounting for 14% of overall vehicle sales.

Tripura follows closely with a 13.73% penetration rate for battery-powered mobility options.

Chandigarh (13.50%), Delhi (10.72%), and Assam (9.93%) are also among the top states in terms of EV market penetration, indicating a growing acceptance of this sustainable transport option across diverse regions in India.

Maharashtra has the most EV charging stations

In terms of EV charging infrastructure, Maharashtra leads with as many as 3,079 stations spread across the state.

Delhi follows with 1,886 charging stations and Karnataka has 1,081 stations.

This data underscores the efforts being made by these states to support the growing number of EVs on their roads.

The availability of charging stations is a critical factor in encouraging more people to switch to these vehicles.
