Environment Minister Gopal Rai said the Delhi firecracker ban is necessary as it will help mitigate the surge in air pollution which plagues the capital city during the winter season which is further worsened by burning of firecrackers.

Delhi Firecracker Ban: The Delhi government Monday announced a blanket ban on the production, sale. and use of firecrackers in a bid to curb air pollution in the national capital during the coming winter months. The ban will remain in effect till January 1, 2025, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said, according to an official released issued today.

Asserting that the ban is necessary is help mitigate the surge in air pollution which plagues the capital city during the winter season, Rai said the air quality is further worsened by burning of firecrackers.

“There is an increased risk of air pollution in Delhi during the winter season. Burning firecrackers during this time further exacerbates pollution. In light of this situation, like last year, we are imposing a complete ban on the production, storage, sale, and use of all types of firecrackers, so that people can be protected from pollution,” the minister said, as per the release.

The Environment minister clarified that the ban applies to all types of firecrackers, and will remain in force across Delhi until January 1, next year.

Highlighting the Delhi government’s commitment to addressing air pollution, Rai stated that a ‘Winter Action Plan’ focusing on 21 key areas is being developed which will include various campaigns aimed at controlling pollution, and the government will work closely with citizens to ensure its success.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Minister urged Delhiites to become “Pollution Warrior” and celebrate festivals without bursting firecrackers and help protect the environment by helping reducing air pollution levels.

“We urge all residents of Delhi to celebrate festivals by lighting lamps and sharing sweets instead of using firecrackers. Together, we can take responsibility for reducing pollution and protecting the environment. If every citizen becomes a ‘Pollution Warrior,’ we can prevent the health risks caused by air pollution,” he said.

The minister added that an action plan will be prepared in collaboration with the Delhi Police, Delhi Pollution Control Committee and the Revenue Department to strictly implement the firecracker ban.
