UN Assistant Secretary-General and Senior UNDP Officials to Visit Albania for Three Days

Ivana Zhivković, the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Assistant Administrator, and Regional Director of UNDP for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, will undertake an official visit to Albania from September 9 to 12, 2024. During her visit, Ms. Zhivković will meet with the Prime Minister of Albania, cabinet ministers, international development partners, and local UNDP partners.

One of the key moments of Ms. Zhivković’s visit will be the inauguration of the “Gjergj Kastrioti” 9-year school in Lezhë, alongside the Minister of Education and Sports and the EU Ambassador to Albania. The school, which benefits 631 students and 38 teachers, is one of 63 educational institutions rebuilt or repaired under the “EU4Schools” Program, funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP in Albania. The “EU4Schools” Program, guided by the principles “BuildBackBetter and BuildTogether”, aims to repair and rebuild educational institutions damaged by the 2019 earthquake in Albania.

Ms. Zhivković will also visit the “Empowering Community” Center in Lezhë, part of the “Empowering Community” project funded by USAID Albania and implemented by UNDP. The project involves setting up three “Empowering Community” centers in Durrës, Kurbin, and Lezhë. These centers provide integrated social services for vulnerable groups in these three municipalities.
