President urges global action for stronger and more inclusive UN

PRESIDENT Nangolo Mbumba has called on United Nations (UN) member states to ensure that all UN institutions are inclusive, effective, adaptable, and capable of delivering peace, prosperity, and justice globally.

“We stand at a crossroads in history. The challenges we face, from climate change to global inequality, from geopolitical tensions to the need for the urgent implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, require rigorous collective commitment. The future of the United Nations hinges on our ability to act as a more inclusive, effective, and innovative platform, readjust our strategy, and strengthen our global institutions to address the pressing challenges of our time,” he said.

The president made these remarks during the Summit of the Future Global Call, stressing that member states must ensure the UN remains the primary forum for addressing global problems and forging solutions.

“This means providing the UN with the resources and political support necessary to fulfil its mandate. We must also reaffirm our shared values—peace, security, human rights, and sustainable development—ensuring that the principles of the UN Charter guide our collective action,” President Mbumba said.

He also urged member states to reflect on how the UN can continue to build on multilateralism.

“Multilateralism is not just a choice—it is a necessity in today’s world, particularly for small and developing countries such as the Republic of Namibia. No single nation, no matter how powerful, can solve the complex, cross-border issues that confront us. From pandemics to cybersecurity, from migration to the digital economy, multilateral solutions are imperative. This requires the involvement not just of states but also of civil society, the private sector, and non-state actors,” the president said.

He emphasised that the Namibian government hopes the Pact for the Future, currently under negotiation, will lay new foundations for enhanced representation and inclusivity, better reflecting present-day realities.

“We also look forward to seeing an outcome that particularly addresses UN Security Council reform to tackle contemporary challenges more effectively. We must enhance the UN’s capacity to respond quickly to crises, whether they are humanitarian, environmental, or security-related,” the president said.
