Celebrate fall and 50 years of Gabe’s this weekend in Iowa City
While the Hawkeyes are away, Iowa City will play.
From celebrating 50 years of an Iowa City legend to a warm welcome to the fall season, another exciting weekend is in store for Iowa City.
Here are six events to check out in Johnson County this weekend.

A spooky finale of the Free Movie Series
Get in the spooky spirit with this year’s final installation of the Summer of the Arts’s Free Movie Series on Saturday. Catch a screening of the cult classic Disney movie, “Halloweentown” at 9 p.m. at the Johnson County Fairground. Halloweentown’s main character discovers she is a witch and is transported to a magical place to battle evil forces to save the day.
Gabe’s 50th Anniversary Show
Whether you are a student or a longtime Iowa City resident chances are you have a story about Gabe’s, whether it was seeing your friends play in their hardcore band in the 90s or your favorite deep-cut artist making a stop. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Gabe’s is hosting a special show at 8 p.m. Saturday, featuring a lineup of local Iowa City acts, including Sinner Frenz, Fishbait, Worst Impressions, Aseethe, Cactus 5, Lou Sherry, and DJ Big D Grinder. Tickets are on sale now for $10 on Gabe’s website.

Enjoy the beginning of fall at Colony Acres
Colony Acres, a pumpkin patch in North Liberty, is ready to host its annual Kickoff to Fall. The event, held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, allows visitors to bask in autumnal delights at the urban farm. Get lost in the five-acre corn maze or participate in new attractions like the barrel train, pumpkin bowling, and dozens of other activities.
Front Porch Music Festival
The Longfellow neighborhood will hold its ninth annual Front Porch Music Festival, a celebration of music, from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22. Various Longfellow community members will play from the front porches or yards of 16 homes between Clark Street nd Dearborn Street. Guests are welcome to stroll the neighborhood to listen to the music or join in as part of the “open jam.” Guests at the free community event can expect to see musicians of all ages playing various musical styles, from jazz and the blues to EDM and rock.
Oh, Auctioneer!
“Oh, Auctioneer!” is a performance art piece by playwright and comedian Megan Gogerty. It is a fundraiser that combines Gogerty’s signature storytelling with the live auction format. Audience members get assigned bid numbers and bid real money for a collection of curiosities and touching mementos. Doors for “Oh, Auctioneer!” open at 1:30 p.m., with the performance starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at the East Side Recycling Education Center. Tickets are $20 at the door. Bidding is optional.

The Two Tracks
Alt-Americana and country-rock band, The Two Tracks are coming to the James Theater on Friday, Sept. 20. The Two Tracks hail from the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming and bring a fresh spin to the genre with poignant lyrics that connect the band to the audience. Tickets are on sale on the James Theater’s website.
