Educator Katie Suthard shares takeaways from Science for Society Advocate Program

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — A program that serves as a support hub for stem educators and mentors to assist students from traditionally underrepresented ethnicities in entering more STEM research fairs and competitions.

After first being exposed to science fairs for the first time by Disney Plus, Salem High School teacher Katie Suthard later discovered the various grant program offerings.

One program captured her attention, in which she applied to called the Advocate Program.

“Last year was my first year to apply, and I got it. So, you actually do get financial stipends for being a member of this and they also pay for your trip to Washington D.C., where you go, and you meet with all of these other teachers who received it and you get to fellowship with them and make those connections.”

“Throughout your school year, what we’re doing as advocates is reaching out to those students who are underrepresented in stem and science research, and helping them complete those projects and not only complete those projects but take those projects and compete in competitions.”
