Here’s what you can hear at MU’s new music concerts this fall
Thanks to the Mizzou New Music Initiative, fresh and often adventurous strains of music can be heard radiating from the University of Missouri. A set of fall concerts invite listeners to go deeper into these new sounds.
The first of five engagements — stemming from a residency by the Luminoso Horn Quartet — has passed, but more performances are on approach.
The Mizzou New Music Ensemble, one of the school’s flagship performing collectives, will be in concert Oct. 6, then will return Nov. 17 to collaborate in real time with Argentine artists Mauricio Charbonnier and Martin Fraile.
October 16-18, Hub New Music will enjoy a residency at MU, culminating in an Oct. 18 performance. Forged in Detroit, the celebrated ensemble creates from its configuration of flute, clarinet, violin and cello. Hub has performed the works of remarkable composers such as Tyshawn Sorey, Donnacha Dennehy and Nico Muhly.
The school’s Sankofa Chorale, directed by professor Brandon Boyd, is an ensemble “where singers, regardless of ethnicity, can perform the various genres of the Black tradition,” according to its website. On Nov. 5, the Chorale will premiere “Egaile” from South African composer Sabelo Mthembu.
Each concert takes places in Sheryl Crow Hall in the Sinquefield Music Center, and admission is free. Learn more at https://newmusic.missouri.edu/.
