Students to showcase innovative science projects in Dar

DAR ES SALAAM: STUDENTS from various secondary schools are set to display their innovative projects at an exhibition in Dar es Salaam starting tomorrow.

The annual exhibition, organised by Young Scientists Tanzania (YST), will feature 45 science projects.
YST Board Chairman, Prof Yunus Mgaya, announced that 90 students and 45 teachers will showcase their innovations during the event.

The projects aim to provide practical solutions in areas such as agricultural product storage, human health, automated irrigation systems, environmental conservation, electricity optimisation, energy solutions, food safety and digital innovations.

“Investment in science among young students is critical, especially in a world advancing rapidly in technology. The future development of our country relies on science,” Prof Mgaya said.

He also noted that this year saw a significant increase in project submissions, with 1,055 applications received.

Of these, 394 projects were screened and mentored by YST science advisors, resulting in 191 fully developed innovations, of which 45 were selected for exhibition.

YST co-founder Dr Gozbert Kamugisha emphasised the organisation’s 14-year commitment to nurturing scientific talent among secondary school students.

He highlighted YST’s role in providing students with opportunities to create solutions to local challenges through its science mentoring programme.

“YST has trained 16,876 students and 2,788 teachers in scientific and technological methodologies over the years,” Dr Kamugisha said.

Karimjee Foundation Executive Officer, Caren Rowland, reaffirmed the foundation’s continued support for YST, noting that the project reflects their dedication to nurturing future thinkers, innovators and problem-solvers.
