Conservatory releases new music class list for youth
Sevilya Hendrickx-Rai discovered the beauty of classical music at a young age. Now the second-generation classical musician is passing on her appreciation at the Vancouver Island Conservatory of Music and Arts, based in Port Alberni.
Both of Hendrickx-Rai’s parents are classical musicians. Hendrickx-Rai received her formal education “in two very culturally active yet different countries,” she said. She learned from the Russian Federation and was exposed to contemporary music while in the Netherlands with the Royal Conservatory.
She has also performed with the Vancouver Opera as guest principal viola in 2022, among many other musical endeavours.
Hendrickx-Rai offers group lessons for children aged four to nine years to explore classical music and art. She leads them in singing, playing different musical instruments and creating art in different forms.
“Let the magic of music and art inspire your little ones,” she said. “Music facilitates learning, instills respect and pride, and increases self-esteem and positive social interaction.
