New Delhi: Two years, and the work on underpass near Haiderpur Metro station on the Outer Ring Road-GT Karnal intersection is still on giving a tough time to commuters. Even after two years, the project remains incomplete which was expected to complete within 12 months. The construction of the underpass started in September 2022 and still the underpass is not even close to completion in the near future.

The task of constructing the underpass was given to the Public Works Department (PWD). The official of the PWD said that a significant portion of the construction work, including ramps, thrust beds, and RCC concrete boxes, has been completed. However, the project is currently stalled due to the pending land transfer for a major drain managed by the Delhi government’s Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD). Land transfer is necessary to proceed with the construction of the underpass.

The project progress report for August 2024 indicates that the relocation of a gas pipeline was finished in November 2023, with a payment of Rs 5.15 crore made to the power distribution company for line relocation. The acquisition of land from the IFCD still needs to be cleared. The official of PWD added that the construction of the thrust bed and four concrete boxes, which will form the base of the underpass, has been finished. Equipment is being prepared for the box-pushing progress, which will begin shortly.

The motorists travelling on the Outer Ring Road are the ones who suffer the most due to the delay. Additionally, the Metro construction work between Madhuban Chowk and Mukarba Chowk worsen the situation. Delhi Traffic Police has published several advisories over the past few months.

The primary objective of building an underpass on Max Wali Road leading to Shalimar Bagh is to alleviate traffic congestion on GT Road and Outer Ring Road. Currently, Vehicles travelling from Badli to Shalimar Bagh on Outer Ring Road are required to take a detour through the main Mukarba Chowk loop. The new underpass will shorten the travel distance by 1.5 kilometres.
