Friendship with the US or enmity with China, why is India not getting entry in the UN Security Council; who has put a lock on it

India has been striving for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for many years but there are many challenges in its path which are making its destination difficult. The four permanent members of the Security Council like America, Britain, France and Russia have supported India’s membership but China remains the biggest obstacle in India’s path. The ongoing border dispute between India and China and China considering India as a regional rival are the main reasons for this opposition. China does not want India to occupy that high platform where its hold remains strong.

Where are the hurdles for India

There is another front against India becoming a permanent member, known as ‘Uniting for Consensus’ (UfC). This group supports permanent membership without veto power. Their view is that more non-permanent members should be added to the Security Council, which will bring diversity in the decision-making process, but India’s stand is that the new permanent members should also get veto power. This issue remains a major sticking point between the two sides.

The US has supported India’s permanent membership in principle, but in practice its policy is a bit skeptical. Many American experts believe that India does not always act in accordance with the interests of Western countries and hence it cannot be considered a reliable partner. This opinion creates stagnation in US policies.

Regional challenges are creating difficulties

Apart from this, India is also facing regional challenges. Competition with China and increasing instability in neighboring countries are creating difficulties for India’s demand for permanent membership. Recent political changes in Bangladesh have raised questions about India’s position in the South Asian region, due to which its regional role is also being monitored.

How can India get permanent membership in UNSC

Experts say that India will have to strengthen its position on the international platform to get permanent membership in the UNSC. For this, India will have to focus on many domestic issues. These include improving the human development index, reducing economic inequality and improving infrastructure. If India overcomes its internal weaknesses, then this change can prove beneficial not only for it but for the whole world.
