MERIDIAN – The Idaho State Police (ISP) has announced Matthew Gamette as the recipient of the 2024 Rick Groff Visionary Leadership in Forensic Science Award. This prestigious honor recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership in advancing forensic science, reflecting the legacy of Rick Groff, a pioneer in forensic services.
Since 2008, Gamette has led significant advancements within the Idaho State Police Forensic Services (ISPFS) laboratory system. His efforts in acquiring advanced technology, implementing streamlined processes, and expanding services have had a profound impact on forensic science in Idaho. These improvements have provided critical support to law enforcement, prosecutors, and the citizens of Idaho.
“Matthew’s commitment to forensic science has propelled ISPFS to the forefront of innovation and excellence,” said Colonel Gardiner, Director of the Idaho State Police. “His vision and determination improve forensic capabilities not only in Idaho but across the nation.”
Key achievements under Gamette’s leadership include the introduction of virtual testimony at the Supreme Court level, reducing travel expenses and saving taxpayer money, as well as enhancing toxicology services with new extraction methods and additional instruments for faster, more accurate analyses. Gamette’s leadership was pivotal in securing $5.2 million in federal funding to establish Idaho’s first statewide cold case team, which aims to resolve unsolved cases. Additionally, he has fostered collaboration with agencies such as the Washington State Patrol for fire debris analysis training and secured contractor support for document examination services.
Matthew Gamette’s influence extends beyond Idaho, having served on national and international forensic science boards and committees. He also contributed to recovery efforts for the Puerto Rico forensic laboratory after Hurricane Maria.
