Tameside hits the right note for budding musicians

YOUNG people with a passion for making music are being pitched a symphony of opportunities that will really strike a chord.

Tameside Music Service helps anyone up to the age of 25 to learn to play, write and edit music.

They can join any or all of the 14 available bands, choirs or groups, for a fee of £10 per term.

There are opportunities to perform in historic, internationally renowned venues like Band on the Wall and the Stoller Hall, as well as learn new skills, improve confidence and make friends.

The service – based at Birch Lane Centre in Dukinfield – is part of Tameside Council’s Children’s Services and the Greater Manchester Music Hub.

Councillor Teresa Smith, Executive Member for Children’s Services, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for young people to join a band or group and fulfill their musical ambitions and get to perform at a famous venue.

“The wide range of groups and styles of music available to join at Tameside Music Service means that there’s something for everyone.

“Music is a wonderful way of connecting and inspiring people and can build skills, discipline and confidence, and change people’s lives. And who knows, we may discover the next Oasis or Katherine Jenkins here in Tameside.”

Young people can drop into one of the groups, which take place as follows:

Mondays: Junior Strings at 4.30pm and Senior Strings at 5pm.

Tuesdays: Junior Wind Band at 4pm and Brass Group and Woodwind Group at 5pm.

Wednesdays: Band Skills at 4pm, 5pm, 6pm and 7pm.

Thursdays: Infant Choir at 4.30pm, Theory lessons at 4.30pm, Ukulele Group at 4.30pm, Junior Choir at 5.15pm, Jazz Band at 5.45pm and Senior Choir at 6pm.
