Giancarlo Esposito Isn’t Worried About Megalopolis’ Bad Reviews
Francis Ford Coppola is no stranger to making a controversial film — now considered classics in terms of film literacy, Apocalypse Now and The Godfather were considered provocative and arduous-to-make pictures. With his newest, Megalopolis, debuting to a flurry of mixed reviews, starring actor Giancarlo Esposito remains cool in the face of it all.
On X through AP Entertainment’s account, when asked about the negative reviews, the veteran actor gave his thoughts on the film, calling it “innovative” and perhaps not what the audience may expect, but ultimately has faith that the movie will do well. Esposito elaborates, “This is an innovative movie to begin with. I mean Francis [Ford Coppola] breaks the third wall. He tells the story in a very different way than any filmmaker has ever told before, not only with words, but visually. And at the end of this movie, you have hope for the future. And I think it’s a film that people just don’t expect. It’s an art film. It’s a fable. And so it’s very different than what we’re used to.“
He’s correct, Coppola is known for taking artistic risks and feels very strongly about rejecting formula: “As we know, the art we revere — Bizet’s Carmen, artists like Picasso, Monet, and Matisse — is art that in its time was considered too risky or a failure…Apocalypse Now is a perfect example. When it came out, people said, ‘What the hell is this?’ But they never stopped going to see it. With Megalopolis, you can’t put a label on it. And that’s great. That’s the kind of film I like.”
Giancarlo Esposito on Megalopolis: “I Don’t Know of any Negative Publicity”
Esposito continues with his positive feelings on the project: “So I think, you know, sometimes people have a — they don’t know how to take that. But from my experience at Cannes, you know, a 17-minute ovation. My experience at TIFF [Toronto International Film Festival], people love this movie. So that’s why I said I don’t know of any negative publicity at all. It hasn’t come out yet, so no one’s really written about it. But they will be. You wait and see.”
It currently holds a score of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, but as previously mentioned by Coppola, sometimes a piece of art needs to age before being absorbed into the culture. It’s also his passion project — he funneled $120 million dollars of his own into the film and suffered some bad press regarding creative differences, conflict of set and allegations of misconduct towards the director himself.
Megalopolis is described best as “a Roman Epic set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves.”
Megalopolis will be released in theaters on September 27th, 2024.
