Ban on cars with Chinese software in the US, proposal came a day after Biden-Modi meeting
After the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden, the US Commerce Department has announced a major step. It said on Monday that a demand has been made to ban the sale of connected and automatic vehicles in the US. Vehicles equipped with Chinese and Russian software and hardware should be banned in particular. This is necessary for national security and the safety of American drivers. It is known that Biden said in a conversation with Modi that the US supports the initiative to reform global institutions to reflect India’s important voice. This also includes the demand to make India a permanent member by making changes in the United Nations Security Council.
There are very few cars in the US with Chinese and Russian software. But the problem with hardware is more complex. Therefore, commerce officials said the ban on software will be effective for the 2027 model year. The hardware ban will be on units with model year 2030 or without a model year from January 1, 2029. In this way, this rule will not apply to cars with Chinese software already on the roads of America.
‘There is a risk of personal information being leaked’
The agency said that the measures announced on Monday are very important. Especially considering that technology like microphones, cameras, GPS tracking and Bluetooth in cars make Americans more vulnerable to bad elements. From home addresses to personal information can be obtained through them. It can also be found out where their children’s school is. Now we need to be cautious about this.
‘It is possible that all vehicles may come to a halt’
US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said that some extreme situations can also come before us. For example, a foreign rival can shut down many vehicles running in America or gain control over them simultaneously. In such a situation, accidents can happen and traffic on the roads can come to a halt. Raimondo said, ‘These things are not about business or economic benefits. This is completely a matter related to national security. At present, the good news is that there are not many Chinese or Russian cars on our roads.’
