An Auckland scholar says publishing a travel diary in te reo Māori of his journeys in India is a statement on the language here.

Peter Keegan from Waikato-Maniapoto and Ngāti Porou, a senior lecturer in education at the University of Auckland, self-published Ko te Torotoro i te Whenua o Īnia.

He says as well as providing his insights into a country and its cultures he’s fascinated by, it can also serve as a learning resource and, he hopes, encourage people to produce a wider range of titles in te reo than fiction, historic non-fiction or translations.

“If someone looks at my book, done a lot of traveling, and thinks, oh, they could do much better, that’s been my purpose. And there’s all sorts of modern topics out there that that no one is writing in Māori about. That that really needs to happen to kind of boost Māori as a revitalized language,” Mr Keegan says.

The pukapuka can be found at bookstores or downloaded as a free e-book.
