Neil Young to attend Memphis Music Hall of Fame ceremony: Here’s why

Rock legend Neil Young will be in the Bluff City this week, appearing as part of the Memphis Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts on Friday night.

Young — who just helped headline the Farm Aid 2024 concert in New York — will be on hand at the Cannon Center to honor his longtime collaborator, keyboardist, songwriter and session player Spooner Oldham, who will be taking his place alongside eight other members of the 2024 Hall of Fame class.

Oldham, who has worked with Young since the late-‘70s, performed as part of his band at this past weekend’s Farm Aid show.

In addition to Oldham, this year’s Memphis Music Hall of Fame class includes deep soul singer James Carr, hitmaking garage band The Gentrys, prolific rap producer Jazze Pha, R&B legend Wilson Pickett, opera star Kallen Esperian and famed vocal group Rhodes, Chalmers & Rhodes. Memphis music businessmen Jack Soden, head of Graceland/Elvis Presley Enterprises, and Kevin Kane, head of Memphis Tourism, will also take their place as Hall of Famers.

The Memphis Music Hall of Fame — operated by the Smithsonian-branded Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum — was launched in 2012, as a way of honoring musical greats from or associated with Memphis and the Mid-South.
