The President of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) spoke to the attendees at the “New York International Trade Fair & Chamber Expo 2024,” highlighting the noteworthy advancements made by Bangladesh in the apparel manufacturing industry. Bangladesh is currently the second-largest global supplier and the third-largest supplier to the United States.

The president was excited about the occasion and emphasised the shared goal of creating a “new Bangladesh,” which has been created by an incredible revolution spearheaded by the nation’s residents and youth. He recognised the dire economic situation that Bangladesh is currently experiencing and described the energetic leadership of the Dr. Muhammad Yunus-led interim administration, which is working to restore the country. Yunus is a Nobel laureate.

During his address, the president of BKMEA made a plea to the business community and congressional members in the United States to help Bangladesh change its economic situation by implementing practical policies and programs. In particular, he called for the restoration of the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) for the apparel industry, or alternative duty-free access for Bangladeshi apparel exports, emphasising that prompt support is essential to averting an economic downturn.

The president emphasised Bangladesh’s progress regarding worker rights and safety, saying that the nation is now a model for social compliance and safety standards in the clothing manufacturing industry. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Bangladesh maintains exceptionally high standards for electrical, fire, and construction safety. It also has the most US Green Building Council (USGBC) certified green factories—227 of which are Platinum certified.

He also talked about the difficulties Bangladeshi exporters face, such as unethical business practices that drive down the prices of their goods. In order to guarantee fair pricing for clothing and to recoup unreimbursed export revenues, the president emphasised the need for cooperation between the business community in Bangladesh and the US and suggested that enterprises involved in unethical actions be placed on a blacklist.
