Quad expands Indo-Pacific clean energy push

Australia has announced a $50 million initiative to develop and diversify clean energy supply chains in the Indo-Pacific region.

The program, known as the Quad Clean Energy Supply Chain Diversification Program, is part of a broader effort by the Quad alliance, which includes Australia, India, Japan, and the United States.

The program will focus on solar photovoltaic (PV), hydrogen electrolyser, and battery supply chains. It aims to support research and development projects as well as feasibility studies in these areas.

The first round of applications is expected to open in November 2024, with up to $25 million available for grants ranging from $100,000 to $2.5 million. A second round is planned for the latter half of 2025.

A key feature of the program is its emphasis on international collaboration. Projects must be jointly delivered by Australian organisations and partners from eligible Indo-Pacific economies. Organisations from India, Japan, and the United States can also participate as additional project partners.

The initiative targets various stages of clean energy supply chains, including raw material processing, component manufacturing, assembly, and recycling. It seeks to improve efficiencies, lower manufacturing costs, and reduce material dependencies in these sectors.

Eligible projects will include innovative research and development efforts as well as feasibility studies for potential clean energy-related facilities in the Indo-Pacific region.

The program aligns with the Quad Principles on Clean Energy Supply Chains, established at the 2023 Quad Leaders’ Summit. It represents a significant step in the alliance’s commitment to fostering sustainable and resilient clean energy infrastructure in the region.

Full guidelines for the program are expected to be published when applications open in November 2024. Potential applicants, including incorporated entities, research organisations, and government bodies, are advised to prepare for the upcoming opportunity to contribute to the development of clean energy supply chains in the Indo-Pacific.
