ESPN college football and NFL analyst and former Baylor Heisman quarterback Robert Griffin III runs onto the field with the Baylor line in an NCAA college football game against Utah, Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, in Waco, Texas.

Each week the Daily Herald will provide five true facts about BYU’s latest football opponent for your enjoyment. This week, Baylor.

One: Filling the seats

Baylor plays in McLane Stadium, which was opened on campus in 2014 and has a seating capacity of 45,140. In the previous 64 seasons, the Bears played at Baylor Stadium/Floyd Casey Stadium.

Two: Line ’em up

The “Baylor Line” cheering section is comprised entirely of new students. Dressed in yellow t-shirts with their graduation year on the back, they arrive early and stay until the singing of “That Good Old Baylor Line” after each home football game. Prior to kickoff, the Line will gather in the south end zone and run onto the field to create a human tunnel to welcome the team. The Line then takes their seats behind the opponent’s bench.

Three: Here comes the Judge

After 70 years without a mascot, Baylor students voted on one in 1914. More than a dozen animals were on the ballot including the buffalo, eagle, antelope, bookworm and bear. The bear won convincingly. The first live bear was a gift from soldiers at Camp MacArthur in Waco in 1917. Each bear mascot is given the title “Judge” in honor of the university’s namesake, Judge R.E.B. Baylor.

Four: Oh, no, it’s the Claw!

In 1960, Baylor’s yell leaders introduced the “Bear Claw” hand signal during the “Sic ’em, Bears” cheer. The initial reaction from fans was mixed. When Grant Teaff arrived as the new head coach in 1972, he initiated a new era of Baylor football. The Bear Claw and the cheer came to symbolize pride in Baylor athletics and is now a tradition.

Five: Familiar foes

In its 126-year football history. Baylor has played TCU 119 times, Texas 111 times and Texas A&M 108 times. This will be just the fifth meeting between the Bears and BYU.
