New Delhi, Sep 26 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh is leading the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, having planted 26.5 crore saplings since June 5, the Union Environment Ministry said on Thursday.

Arunachal Pradesh (1.74 crore), Assam (3.17 crore), Chhattisgarh (2.04 crore), Gujarat (15.5 crore), Goa (5.4 lakh), Haryana (12.20 crore), Rajasthan (5.5 crore), Madhya Pradesh (4.41 crore), Punjab (94 lakh), Nagaland (34.6 lakh), Odisha (4.3 crore), and Telangana (8.34 crore) have exceeded their targets with strong community participation, the ministry said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nationwide campaign on World Environment Day, June 5, encouraging people to plant trees as a symbol of love, respect, and honour for their mothers. The initiative aims to combat land degradation and restore degraded areas.

The campaign aims to plant 80 crore trees by September 2024 and 140 crore trees by March 2025.

The ministry said on Wednesday that 80 crore saplings have been planted under the campaign, achieving the target five days ahead of schedule.

It noted that Bihar (1.46 crore), Kerala (11.8 lakh), Maharashtra (1.78 crore), Sikkim (12 lakh) and Uttarakhand (82 lakh) have made significant contributions to the campaign’s success.

Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu are gearing up for their plantation activities in alignment with the monsoon season, it said.
