An air-conditioned EV bus, targeting tourists, has been launched in Dimapur. MLA and Advisor for Food & Civil Supplies, Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, KT Sukhalu attended the ceremonial ribbon cutting programme at Circuit House on September 27, coinciding with the World Tourism Day. 

Greenland Nagaland, the entity behind the initiative termed it a tourism facilitation initiative that is envisioned to serve as an environment friendly mode of transport for tourists, while serving as an avenue for employment for entrepreneurs. Secretary of Greenland Nagaland, Dr Swaraj Mukherjee, said that it is an affiliate organisation of Ministry of Tourism, Nagaland.

Mukherjee informed that the target is to introduce the initiative to all the districts, while adding that it is part of a Green Mobility Project that will introduce Green EVs in all the 16 districts of Nagaland before the Hornbill Festival 2024. 

Sukhalu, in his address, commended the initiative and stressed on the need for promoting sustainable tourism practices in the state. “It’s high time that we become conscious of our environment,” even as the people in general get caught up with modern facilities. 

Air pollution in Nagaland would not be as high as in the metros, but he expressed concern over the influx of a relatively high number of “condemned vehicles,” failing emission norms, from Delhi and Assam into state.  

According to him, it has been encouraging to note an increased tourist football in the state. This, however, has been confined to a few districts, and which should change, he added. 

With “mainland Indians” showing renewed interest to explore Nagaland, he said that the potential of tourism in Nagaland only increases. Here, he said that the youth has much to contribute, taking over and continuing the work of today. 

Meanwhile, Mukherjee informed that they are looking for entrepreneurs, who will take advantage of the PMEGP for financing this kind of initiative. The EV bus comes at a cost of Rs 25 lakh. But he said that the one introduced in Dimapur came at a fixed price of Rs 20 lakh, which was said to be the limit under the PMEGP.
