Chair and CEO Chuck Robbins, said that Cisco aims to position India as a key market and global export hub for its products.

“We have been in India for 29 years and have never been more committed and excited about the opportunities here,” Robbins said.

Located in Sriperumbudur, on the outskirts of Chennai, the new facility will produce a range of Cisco’s routing and switching products to meet domestic demand and exports. To begin with, the facility will initially focus on Cisco’s Network Convergence System (NCS) 540 Series of routers, representing the first phase of the company’s multi year investment plan.

The company is planning to produce printed circuit board assembly components with several layers and products requiring, at times, thousands of individual components, and industrial-grade products in subsequent phases.

Robbins said the company has outlined a multiyear investment plan for the Chennai plant but did not divulge any investment details.

He added that when the decision was made to establish a manufacturing node in India, it was determined that the key to its success, like its other manufacturing nodes worldwide, would be to develop export capabilities.

“We are excited about India as a market and an export hub for Cisco, and are thrilled to be part of the GDP growth of India,” he added.

He noted that the facility uses only 10% of its capacity for the current product, which represents only a “small percentage” of what is possible from the facility in the long term.

“We have earlier said we will be ramping up the first product line by September, which we did. We are now ready to ship. We will do US$1.3 billion of annual throughput with this one product alone,” Robbins noted.

Robbins also said Cisco builds its economic models based on its export models. “We bring in one product that actually has heavy Indian usage. We will then prove our export model and entire manufacturing model, and then we will expand from there.”

Robbins also mentioned that he had a conversation with Ministers about developing the local ecosystem to facilitate and make it much easier for Cisco to continue expanding.

“We are proud to officially open a new manufacturing facility in Chennai, which is a pivotal step in our investments in India,” said Daisy Chittilapilly, President, Cisco India & SAARC.

“This new facility strengthens our capabilities in the country to produce state-of-the-art technologies, contributing to our nation’s technological advancement and global competitiveness,” she added.
