Contributing significantly in boosting Tourism and promoting India’s rich Cultural Heritage

Central Railway has made a significant contribution in the history and development of Indian Railways. It was established in 1951 during the reorganization of Indian Railways. The zone covers major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Bhusaval and Solapur. It also connects important tourist destinations of India.

Indian Railways has played a very important role in the field of tourism. It not only transports passengers from one place to another, but also provides tourists an opportunity to visit various cultural, historical and scenic places of India. Some of the major tourist services of Indian Railways include tourist special trains like “Deccan Odyssey,” “Maharaja Express,” and “Ramayana Circuit Train.” These trains provide a royal experience to the passengers and connect historical and cultural sites.

The major tourist trains originating from Mumbai division of Central Railway include the “Deccan Odyssey”, which travels to historical sites in Maharashtra, Goa and Rajasthan. Apart from this, the Neral – Matheran Hill Railway, a unique mountain railway located in the Western region, takes passengers to Matheran hill station in Maharashtra. This railway started in 1907. Its length is about 21 km, and it runs from Neral to Matheran, a popular hill station near Mumbai. This railway runs on a narrow gauge track and takes tourists through lush green forests, winding valleys and beautiful mountain views. Due to the slow speed of the train, passengers can enjoy the natural beauty comfortably. The journey of Matheran Hill Railway is an exciting experience for the tourists as it passes through dense forests, high hills, and narrow valleys. There are about 221 curves on the way, some of which are very narrow and sharp.

Matheran Hill Railway is also very important from the tourism point of view. It attracts local and foreign tourists who come here to spend time in the lap of nature and the serene atmosphere. The Matheran hill station itself is an eco-sensitive zone where motor vehicles are prohibited, so that the serene and pollution-free environment is maintained.

The Matheran Hill Railway is an important part of the heritage of Indian Railways and offers a memorable travel experience to tourists. This railway not only connects Matheran to Neral but also brings people closer to nature, and holds a special place in the culture and history of Indian Railways.

Stations like Lonavala and Igatpuri under Central Railway are also important from the tourism point of view, as tourists can reach many natural sites and trekking routes from here.

On the occasion of World Tourism Day, this role of Indian Railways becomes even more important, as it not only facilitates tourists to every corner of the country but also showcases the culture, history and natural beauty of India.
