New Delhi: In the premiere episode of the new series The Diplomat, Aditya Raj Kaul, Executive Editor of TV9 Network, engaged in a meaningful conversation with May-Elin Stener, Norway’s Ambassador to India. This series aimed to connect cultures and provide insights into global affairs through discussions with various ambassadors.

The episode focuses on the growing partnership between India and Norway, particularly in areas like maritime cooperation, space exploration, and efforts to combat climate change. Ambassador Stener emphasized that “the Blue Economy is crucial to enhancing India-Norway ties,” highlighting the importance of sustainable development and innovation in strengthening their bilateral relations.

A rich history of diplomatic ties between India and Norway

India and Norway have enjoyed diplomatic ties since February 1947. Over the decades, these bilateral relations have grown significantly, especially in areas such as green energy, information technology, and people-to-people contact.

Kaul discussed with Ambassador Stener how the relationship has progressed over the years. Stener shared her experiences of living in India for the past year, saying, “I’ve traveled to ten states. Indian people are so warm and welcoming. The food is very good here, and there are lots of opportunities to learn.”

Encouraging tourism and cultural exchange between India and Norway

There are about 20,000 to 30,000 Indians living in Norway, and both countries are seeing an increase in tourism. When asked about recommendations for Indians visiting Norway, Stener said that “Norway tourists are coming to India, and Indian tourists are visiting Norway.” She suggested visiting the Taj Mahal, describing it as even more beautiful in real life than in pictures. For Indians traveling to Norway, she recommended visiting Oslo, her hometown, which she loves dearly.

Kaul also discussed the potential for increased trade between the two countries. Stener expressed confidence in the growth of trade relations, stating that “the signature of the trade and economic partnership is really a milestone in the relationship between the two countries.” She believed this will catalyze trade in the next ten years, particularly in sectors where Norwegian businesses show great interest in India.
