Morocco Rises to 2nd Place in Africa

Morocco rose to second place in Africa for innovation, according to the 2024 report of the renowned Global Innovation Index (GII)ة published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

A press release from the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation states that WIPO’s report shows a significant advance for the Kingdom, which has climbed to 66th place among 133 economies worldwide, up 4 positions on the previous edition.

“Moroccan economy demonstrated a remarkable ability to transform investment in innovation into high-performance products and services, ranking 47th in terms of innovation results, with an eight-place rise on the previous edition,” shows the GII 2024 report, quoted in the release.

It also highlights that Morocco joins the group of middle-income economies in the top 70 of the ranking that have progressed the fastest in this ranking since 2013.

The National Plan for Accelerating the Transformation of the Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation Ecosystem (ESRI 2030 Pact), drawn up following an inclusive co-construction approach, deploys actions aimed at consolidating innovation achievements and providing innovative responses to identified challenges, the press release notes.

“The Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation takes this opportunity to express his warmest congratulations to all innovation operators and players, as well as to all partners, for the efforts made and the remarkable achievements that resolutely position Morocco on the path to becoming a nation of knowledge and a crucible of innovation,” the same source adds.

Developed in 2007, the GII assesses the performance of the innovation ecosystem in over 133 economies. It is based on 78 indicators covering the main aspects of innovation, namely institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, business sophistication, as well as knowledge and technology products, and creativity products. These indicators are organized into two categories: inputs (53 indicators) and outputs (25 indicators).
