Parboiled Rice: India Reduces Export Duty on Parboiled Rice to Boost Export Sector | Chandigarh News

Chandigarh: In a move aimed at reviving India’s rice export sector, the Centre announced changes to its rice export policy on Friday, reducing duty on parboiled rice from 20% to 10% while semi-milled or wholly-milled rice has been exempted from duty.
Last year, the Centre had imposed duties on white rice and later banned its export altogether, citing domestic price control measures, low rainfall, and inflation concerns.At the same time, a 20% duty was imposed on parboiled rice. However, recent govt data indicates that India now holds surplus stocks of non-basmati rice, with inflation remaining stable.
Punjab Basmati Rice Millers and Exporters Association vice-president Ranjit Singh Jossan welcomed the decision. He said, “It has come as a big relief. With the paddy crop expected to increase this year due to favourable monsoon conditions, farmers in Punjab and Haryana, who have faced storage challenges due to full warehouses, will benefit greatly.”
It is expected that parboiled rice would soon be completely exempted from duty. India, traditionally a major player in global rice markets, hopes to regain lost ground after a hiatus from international trade. During the export embargo, competitors such as Pakistan, Thailand, and Vietnam capitalised on India’s absence, seizing market opportunities once dominated by Indian rice varieties. “The reopening of exports is very timely,” Jossan said. “It not only revives our exports but also reaffirms India’s position as a reliable supplier of high-quality rice.”
