Sustaining sustainability | The Manila Times
IN my experience, some of the recent international conferences I attended did not end without having a discussion on sustainability, which has become prevalent among organizations. One cannot speak anymore of progress without having a plan of action regarding an institution’s contribution to sustainability. Institutions, in general, have commonly referred to their sustainability concerns as sustainable development goals. The United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development succinctly describes sustainable development as one “that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Some models of sustainability have evolved in the past few years. A decade ago, the business sector had what they called the triple Ps — Profit, People and Planet — which was part of their sustainability goals and corporate responsibility. On the other hand, globalization advocates proposed some years back the three Ms: Market, Mother Nature and Moore’s law (speed and capability of technology increase at an exponential rate every year). Now, another set of variables has been coined: the three Es: Economy, Equity and the Environment.
