Vasso Apostolopoulos soars into top of world’s most cited scientists for 2023, according to Stanford University rankings

Greek Australian Immunology Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos has ranked among the top academics globally in the latest ‘citation ranking’ in the Stanford University Elsevier Global Researcher list.

“I’m thrilled to be recognised once again in the top 2 per cent of researchers according to the Stanford University Elsevier Global Researcher list for 2023,” the scientist told Neos Kosmos.

Prof. Apostolopoulos is a world-renowned researcher in immunology, x-ray crystallography, medicinal chemistry, cellular biology, and drug and vaccine development.

“Even more exciting is my ranking within this list of 13,788 out of 10,257,575 researchers worldwide across all fields, placing me in the top 0.13% globally.

She thanked her “research team, colleagues, and collaborators” for their “invaluable discussions and support.”

“And, thank you to my family for allowing me to stay up all night to write my papers.”

Prof. Apostolopoulos’s pioneering work in the early 1990s resulted in a method of stimulating the immune system, now used by labs globally. Her method has led to trials of vaccine formulations for breast and ovarian cancer. The professor leads the Immunology and Translational Research Group at Victoria University and serves as Pro-Chancellor of Research Partnerships.

The Stanford University Elsevier Global Researcher list features the world’s top 2 per cent of most cited researchers, compiled from data on 9.6 million publications in the Elsevier Data Repository. This marks the sixth list since 2019.

A team led by Prof. John P.A. Ioannidis at Stanford University analyses standardised data on the impact of academic publications and citations to identify and rank the researchers whose scientific articles are most frequently cited by others. The data comparison categorises top researchers into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields based on the established classification by Science-Metrix.

The Stanford listing is a prestigious accolade for Prof. Apostolopoulos, who has also received an impressive array of awards, including the Victorian Premier’s Award for Medical Research and the Young Australian of the Year.
