3 new visa updates for Indian travellers this October

Holiday season is just around the corner, and vacation plans are in full swing. As you carve out travel plans during this time of the year, keep these visa rules in mind to avoid unnecessary surprises and smooth, hassle-free travel.

Sri Lanka resumes an online ETA application system

Travellers from India can now apply for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) directly on an online portal, and no longer have to go through a third party. As of 26 September, Sri Lanka reintroduced its online visa application platform. In order to apply for an ETA, you need to upload all the required documents and pay a certain fee. The fee amount is dependent on the type of tourist visa; these range from a single-entry for 30 days to a 10 year, multiple entry visa. A recent update confirms that Indians are eligible for visa-free travel to Sri Lanka, allowing them to enjoy a 30 day free-visa period and a double entry permit from the date of first arriving to Sri Lanka. Indians can apply for their ETAs online before arriving in Sri Lanka.

Thailand to introduce ETA system from December 1

Since November 2023, Indians have enjoyed hassle-free travel to Thailand under a visa-free policy. This is set to continue until November 2024, but starting December 1, 2024, all visa-exempt travellers including Indians will need to apply for Electronic Travel Authorisation before travelling to Thailand. With an ETA in hand, travellers can enter Thailand for up to 60 days and have the option to extend their stay by up to 30 days. The ETA is free of charge, and by June 2025, it will be integrated with Thailand’s e-Visa system for a streamlined application process.

India to join Australia’s Working Holiday Maker visa program

From 1 October 2024, eligible Indian passport holders can register in a ballot that gives them the possibility of being randomly selected to apply for a first Work and Holiday visa to Australia. Selected participants will be invited to lodge an online visa application. Each year, the program will grant a first Work and Holiday visa to up to 1,000 eligible Indian citizens aged between 18 and 30. If chosen, you can visit Australia for one year, undertake short-term work and study while you vacation in the country. If you meet certain requirements, you are eligible to apply for a subsequent Work and Holiday visa.
