All About the Grand Palais, Chanel’s Gloriously Restored Playground

Écoute: Paris Fashion Week has officially commenced, and, if there’s one show we’ll be all eyes for here at ELLE DECOR, it’s Chanel’s spring-summer 2025 ready-to-wear presentation on October 1. The Grand Palais—a stately Beaux Arts gem crafted of stone, steel, and glass in Paris’s eighth arrondissement—will serve as the venue for this iconic presentation, arriving hot on the heels of Olympic events held at the historic site.

The luxury fashion house has recently recommitted itself to serving as the Grand Palais’s exclusive patron for another five years. The stewardship comes with a donation of €30 million, facilitated by the Chanel Culture Fund, which lends support to cultural institutions in keeping with Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s penchant for the arts.

The Grand Palais and Chanel, who have had a long and fruitful partnership, have just renewed their vows, and we couldn’t be happier.

The upcoming runway show marks the end of a hiatus on all fashion shows at the venue, as the palais closed for extensive renovations in 2021 (the last show Chanel staged there took place in October 2020). The wait was worth it: Spearheaded by Chatillon Architectes, the work touched all 775,000 square feet of the palais. In addition to more sweeping improvements like upgrades to the building’s structural system and its accessibility standards, Chatillon Architectes equipped the building’s nave with insulated floors that will now extend its operating time, restored the balconies’ vaulted ceilings, repaired mosaics throughout the space, and restored the grand staircase to its original glory.

The building received structural, technical, and aesthetic upgrades, including a restoration of the grand stair.

The restoration of the Grand Palais mobilized 57 companies and 675 tradesmen and craftsmen, per a press release. Considering the fact that the structure was inaugurated during the 1900 Universal Exhibition—quickly becoming a source of national pride and a home for era-defining cultural exhibits and events—this kind of concerted effort is only fitting. Because of Chanel’s financial backing of the renovation, the building’s nave will now be named in honor of Coco Chanel herself.

The project brought together the work of hundreds of artisans.

The October 1 spectacle is going to be many things: a continuation of Chanel’s history of putting on awe-inspiring shows at the palais (since as early as 2005, under Karl Lagerfeld’s artistic direction), a celebration of its reinvigorated partnership with the French monument, and a sneak preview of what luxury fashion is going to look like in the coming year.

The luxury fashion house’s 2017 Paris Fashion Week show inside the Grand Palais was, literally, out of this world.

In its renewed glittering condition, the Grand Palais is bound to provide a stunning backdrop to an equally stunning runway procession. If Chanel’s previous shows at the palais—marked by no-holds-barred stage sets that have included space stations, indoor waterfalls, and white sand beaches—are any indication, you’ll want to be there (in person or in spirit) to marvel at every gleaming detail.
