Georgia football drops to No. 5 in AP Top 25 Poll | Georgia Sports
There is a new but familiar king of college football. After a 41-34 victory over Georgia on Saturday evening in Tuscaloosa, Alabama moved to No. 1 in the latest AP Top 25 Poll. The Bulldogs dropped to No. 5 after suffering their first regular-season loss since 2020.
Georgia is the fourth-highest ranked SEC team behind Alabama, Texas and Tennessee, and is only one of two non-undefeated teams to appear in the top 10. Alabama, Ohio State and Tennessee all jumped the Bulldogs with Oregon behind them in the rankings.
Last season, the Bulldogs were the No. 1 team for the entirety of the regular season, until a 27-24 loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship game knocked them down to No. 6. In 2022, Georgia was ranked on top for 13 of the 16 AP Polls, including the last 10-straight weeks.
Despite Alabama’s dominant performance, the decision to crown it No. 1 was not unanimous. Texas received 19 of the 63 first-place votes, while Ohio State earned four. Georgia earned none for the first time this season.
The Bulldogs played their worst game of the year against the Crimson Tide, going down 28-0 early. Carson Beck appeared inaccurate, while drops and offensive penalties plagued Georgia’s receivers.
The defense was not much better, allowing 547 yards of total offense. The Bulldogs missed many tackles and had trouble pressuring Jalen Milroe throughout the game. The secondary also could not limit explosive plays, especially on the boundaries.
“A lot of credit to [Alabama] and for us,” Smart said after the game. “Humility is always a week away.”
Despite the poor play, Georgia found itself leading in the second half. The Bulldogs will have to carry the momentum if they are to compete with the elite teams remaining on their schedule.
Georgia still has to host No. 4 Tennessee and will travel to No. 2 Texas and No. 12 Ole Miss. The Bulldogs already lost to No. 1 Alabama and soundly defeated No. 15 Clemson.
Luckily for Georgia, the expanded 12-team playoffs leave more room for error throughout the regular season.
