Santorini Experience 2024: Thrilling sports events and activities await in breathtaking locations

The Santorini Experience 2024 returns from October 3 to 6, featuring an array of sports activities for professional and amateur athletes alike. The event, now in its seventh year, offers participants the chance to compete in picturesque settings, including the Caldera, the Volcano, and the scenic trails connecting Oia to Fira.

Santorini Experience 2024 is organised by the Municipality of Thira and ActiveMedia Group, under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Tourism. One of the highlights is the 1.5-mile (2.4 km) open water swim from the Volcano to the old port of Fira on October 4.

Athletes will swim through Santorini’s iconic waters with safety ensured by Lifeguard Patrol and boats from the Santorini Boatmen’s Association. The race’s technical direction is overseen by Olympic coach Nikos Gemelos, with participation from top international swimmers like Barbara Pozzobon, Leonie Beck, and Mario Sanzullo, fresh off their Paris Olympic performances.

On October 5, runners will take on 15 km, 10 km, and 5 km races along the picturesque paths of the Caldera, offering breathtaking views of the volcano. The races start from the desalination plant in Oia and cover both dirt and paved paths. Each route promises an unforgettable running experience through one of the world’s most famous landscapes.

Aside from the main competitions, Santorini Experience 2024 offers a variety of activities for children and local residents. Olympic gold medalist Michalis Mouroutsos will lead taekwondo lessons for young athletes, while basketball legends Georgios Printezis and Joe Arlauckas will host a basketball clinic.

For younger participants, Periklis Iakovakis, an Olympian and European champion in the 400m hurdles, will organise a kids’ running event. Additionally, speeches on topics like diversity and road safety will be delivered by Dimitris Papanikolaou and Thanasis Chountras, respectively, aimed at local students.

Participants will receive a comprehensive race package, including medals, technical t-shirts, and safety gear. hoper, the official helicopter partner, will offer an exclusive tour to the open-water swim winner. HOKA is also onboard as the Official Footwear Sponsor, rewarding the top runners in the 15 km race.
