George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s Wolfs is Apple TV+’ Most Watched Movie Ever
The pull of Hollywood heavyweights George Clooney and Brad Pitt has proven to be a winning combination for Apple TV+ as their new action comedy Wolfs has become the most viewed movie in the platform’s history. According to Deadline, the arrival of the Jon Watts-directed film has seen its viewership spike around the world, leading to a reported 30% week-on-week increase in audience volumes.
Wolfs is a film that seemed certain to get a worldwide theatrical release, which you would expect from a movie packing the talent of Clooney and Pitt. However, seemingly to the annoyance of at least one of its stars, Wolfs instead abandoned its original regular release plan and pivoted to a single week run in select cinemas with an immediate debut on Apple TV+ to follow. Now it seems that perhaps the film would have indeed done well in theaters, as it has dominated the streaming charts since premiering on the platform on September 27.
A sequel to Wolfs is already in development, and this runaway success has just bolstered the chances of that making it all the way to completion, as Apple will be desperate to see lightning strike twice. Over the last few years, Apple TV+ has stuck to their main catalog of original movies and shows, and although their stats have paled in comparison to Netflix, they have been constantly seeing records being broken with each new release. In fact, Wolfs has taken the title from another recently released movie, Matt Damon and Casey Affleck’s The Instigators, which hit the platform on August 2 to a recording breaking debut.
George Clooney Was Not Happy With Apple’s Release Strategy for Wolfs
While a hit is a hit, regardless of whether it is in cinemas or on streaming, there are still many actors who believe the place for movies is first and foremost on the big screen. That was certainly the case with Wolfs, and star George Clooney made his feelings on the matter known when the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year. Clooney said of the movie’s release:
“Yes, we wanted it to be released [in cinemas], we’ve had some bumps along the way, that happens. You know when I did Boys in the Boat we did it for MGM and then it ended being for Amazon and we didn’t get a foreign release at all which was a surprise. There are elements of this that we are figuring out… It is a bummer, of course it’s a bummer. On the other hand a lot of people are going to see the film and we are getting a release in a few hundred theaters, but, yeah, it would have been nicer to have a wide release.”
Now it appears that, for Apple, the decision to restrict Wolfs’ theatrical presence has paid off. Whether the sequel will become another streaming exclusive, or will be allowed to spread its wings with a wider theatrical release, is something that will be answered in good time.
