GREEN BAY (WLUK) — October is Manufacturing Month in Wisconsin, and the NEW Manufacturing Alliance is celebrating by hosting a series of events aimed at promoting education and giving back.
FOX 11’s Pete Petoniak helped kickstart the month-long celebration by emceeing the 10th annual Get Real Math & Science Video premiere, held Tuesday at the Meyer Theatre in Green Bay.
During the event, NEW Manufacturing Alliance also debuted a “Successful Communication in the Workplace” video featuring five area manufacturers and additional videos featuring manufacturing careers and products made in Oconto and Shawano counties.
Prizes were up for grabs at the premiere, as well. Schools could win $500 for their math and science programs and counseling departments, and tech ed teachers were eligible to win a welding machine valued at over $7,000.
“What we do is bring educators and manufacturers together to really talk about how we can get kids excited about careers. What came from that is our Get Real Math and Get Real Science videos that we’re debuting for the 10th time,” saidAnn Franz, executive director of the NEW Manufacturing Alliance.
These videos are then used as educational tools in classrooms nationwide.
“What’s really cool is it’s not just our community, but throughout the country, we have educators using these videos. And I think the key is we partner with actual teachers to create these, and then we work with industries so the terminology, the things that they’re saying, are really real. And that’s what we want kids to see — you know what, you really are going to use this one day,” Franz explained.
Throughout October,NEW Manufacturing Alliance is paying the bussing costs for students to take plant tours at regional manufacturing companies.
Other events taking place later this month include thecelebration of the 13th annual Excellence in Mfg./K-12 Partnerships Awards dinner and the 14th annual Manufacturing First Expo & Conference. These events will take place at the Resch Expo October 29 and 30, respectively.
