Rugrats Set for Live-Action Feature Film With CGI Babies

Rugrats is going to be reimagined in live-action. Over three decades after the original animated show debuted on Nickelodeon, it’s been reported that the franchise’s first live-action adaptation is now in the works.

Per Deadline, a new live-action CGI hybrid film based on Rugrats is officially in development. An additional report by Variety clarified that the babies will be animated in a live-action environment. Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) is on board to direct the feature, while the screenplay comes from Saturday Night Live‘s Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. No additional details about the project, such as casting information and plot details, have been revealed.

The original animated series was created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain. Originally debuted in 1991, the show was one of the original “Nicktoons” of the era, joined by Ren and Stimpy and Doug. Rugrats primarily followed four imaginative toddlers – Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil – as they bust free from their playpen to go on adventures and learn life lessons. The cartoon would ultimately run for nine seasons before wrapping up in 2004.

The Rugrats Franchise Has Had Multiple Animated Movies

The Rugrats franchise also consisted of multiple animated movies. In 1998, The Rugrats Movie was released, bringing Tommy Pickles and pals from the small screen to the big screen. A sequel, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie, would follow with a theatrical release in 2000. The third theatrical film, Rugrats Go Wild, would see a release in 2003. Additionally, there were two films released directly to DVD in 2005 and 2006. They were part of t he Rugrats: Tales from the Crib series, consisting of “Snow White” and “Three Jacks and a Beanstalk.”

In 2021, Paramount+ rebooted Rugrats with a new series using CG animation. The show brought back several original voice cast members, and while the art style was updated with more modern animation, Tommy and his pals still looked reminiscent to how they did in the original show. This reboot lasted two seasons and was pulled completely from Paramount+ earlier this year.

“I love seeing these characters again,” Dil Pickles voice actor Tara Strong previously told CBR about the joys of reprising that role for the animated reboot. “Who doesn’t love Tommy? I love everything about Tommy. He’s such a fascinating, brave little guy. I think even though Dil still annoys him like any other brother, he looks up to him and loves him.”

Strong continued, “It feels like coming home, and this show encapsulates everything that is good about acting, animation, and inclusion. Rugrats was one of the first shows that had a Jewish family, a Black family, [and] a gay Mom that’s now out in the world. Representation really matters, and I think Rugrats has always been an inclusive place where kids might not have known what Hanukkah or Passover, or Kwanzaa was. If any show got a reboot and could help the world find peace and acceptance of each other, it’s The Rugrats.”

The live-action Rugrats movie doesn’t yet have a set release date.
