Ukraine Secures $1 Bln in Aid from USAID

Ukraine is set to receive $1 billion from the US Agency for International Development (USAID), with $825 million earmarked specifically for the restoration and support of its energy infrastructure, according to Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko.

This funding is part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the country’s energy sector, which has been severely impacted by the ongoing conflict.

Galushchenko stated that USAID Administrator Samantha Power announced the allocation of $825 million to bolster Ukraine’s energy sector, reflecting the US commitment to assisting Ukraine in its time of need.

In total, the aid package amounts to $1 billion, with an additional $275 million designated for humanitarian support. USAID has also launched a five-year rehabilitation program for Ukrainians, with $13 million allocated to its implementation.

In August, Ukraine’s Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko revealed that Ukraine had provided the US with a list of equipment required to restore its damaged energy sector. 

This was expected to lead to $800 million in US assistance to aid in recovery efforts.

The conflict has caused significant damage to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously reported that all thermal power plants and a large portion of the country’s hydroelectric facilities had been destroyed.

Galushchenko echoed these concerns, noting in June that Ukraine had lost half of its electricity generation capacity, raising serious challenges for the coming winter. The country’s current electricity imports are insufficient to cover the deficit.
