Men’s Hockey: Introducing the new members of the Ice Bus

The 2024-25 hockey season is finally upon us, and before the UConn men’s hockey team drops the puck against Colgate on Oct. 5, let’s take a dive into the 14 new members of the Ice Bus’s incoming class.  

Transfers 

Nick Carabin: Graduate Senior, Defenseman Mahwah, N.J.

After four years at Princeton, Carabin transferred to UConn as a graduate student. In his three-year career after his freshman season was canceled due to Covid, the 5 ’10 defenseman appeared in 81 games. He scored six goals with 23 assists for 29 points in that span. In the 2023-24 season, Carabin played in 27 games, scoring five goals with 12 assists for 17 points total. Additionally, Carabin was named to the ECAC All-Academic Team three times. 

Hugh Larkin: Graduate Senior, Forward, Livonia, Mich.

For his graduate season, Larkin transfers to UConn after spending four years at Western Michigan. Larkin appeared in 111 games in his four-year career where he scored 15 goals with 13 assists for a total of 28 points. Last season, the 6’2 forward played in all 27 games for Western Michigan. Larkin scored five goals with four assists for nine points and was named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference team in all four seasons of his collegiate career.  

Tyler Muszelik: Junior, Goaltender, Long Valley, N.J.

Muszelik transfers to UConn from the University of New Hampshire and is entering as a junior. In two seasons at New Hampshire, the 6 ‘3 goaltender appeared in 14 games posting 3.24 goals against average with a .883 save percentage. He earned his first collegiate win with a 31 save performance against St. Lawrence in the 2022-23 season. Muszelik was also named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team.  

Viking Gustafsson Nyberg: Sophomore, Defenseman, Stockholm, Sweden

After spending one season at Northern Michigan, Gustafsson Nyberg transferred to UConn. The 6’6 sophomore appeared in all 34 games in his first collegiate season. He finished fourth on the team and first amongst the freshmen in total blocked shots with 44. Gustafsson Nyberg’s first career goal was scored on Oct. 28, 2023 against Ferris State and scored the game-winning goal against St. Thomas on Jan. 19, 2024.

Incoming Freshmen 

Thomas Heaney: Goaltender, Oceanport, N.J.

Heaney will enter UConn following his two-year stint in the NAHL with the Maine Nordiques. He appeared in 63 games total and finished with a 29-24-5 record. Heaney posted a 14-11-4 overall record in his final season with the Nordiques, he finished with 3.36 goals against average and a .900 save percentage. The 6 ‘3 goaltender spent 15 games with the Omaha Lancers of the USHL before his time in the NAHL. With the Lancers, he had 3.5 goals against average and .865 save percentage.  

Callum Tung: Goaltender, Port Moody, British Columbia

After one year in the BCHL with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, Tung enters his freshman season at UConn. The 6’3 goaltender appeared in 28 games and finished with a 22-14-1 overall record. In the regular season, he had 2.80 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. Tung finished the playoffs with a 11-6-1 overall record with 2.11 goals against average and a .940 save percentage.  

Kai Janviriya: Defenseman, Bloomfield, Mich.

Janviriya comes to UConn following one year with the Lincoln Stars in the USHL. He appeared in 61 games and scored four goals with 21 assists for 25 total points. He also was with the USNTDP Juniors team in the USHL and the US National U18 team before his time with the Stars. While with the U18 team, the 5’8 defenseman appeared in 54 total games and scored six goals with 14 assists for 20 total points. 

Kevin Fitzgerald: Defenseman, Bath, Ontario

After spending two years with the Sioux City Musketeers in the USHL, Fitzgerald came to UConn as a freshman. The 5’10 defenseman appeared in 106 games, scoring three goals with 12 assists for 15 points. Before the USHL, Fitzgerald spent time with the NCDC with the New Jersey Rocks and in the CCHl with the Brockville Braces. 

Ethan Whitcomb: Forward, St. Catharines, Ontario 

After a three-year stint with the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the USHL, Whitcomb enters his freshman year with the Huskies. Last season, the 6’4 forward appeared in 60 games, scoring 18 goals with a whopping 44 assists for 64 total points. In his three years with the Lumberjacks, Whitcomb played in 157 total games and scored 50 goals with 78 assists for 128 points.  

Kaden Shahan: Forward, Everett, Washington

Shahan spent two years with the Sioux City Musketeers in the USHL and will begin his freshman season with the Huskies. The 5’11 forward played in 56 total games, scoring 39 goals with 19 assists for 57 points on the season. Shahan helped lead the Musketeers to the playoffs in both the seasons he spent with the team. He played in 10 total playoff games with Sioux City and scored five goals with four assists for a total of nine points.  

Ethan Gardula: Forward, Princeton, Mass.

5-11, Sioux City Musketeers (USHL) 

Gardula comes to UConn after spending two seasons in the USHL with the Sioux City Musketeers. The 5’11 forward appeared in 67 total games for the Musketeers, scoring 22 goals with 31 assists for a total of 54 points. Gardula played a part in the Musketeers playoff run in the 2023-24 season. He played in eight games for Sioux City and scored two goals with three assists for five points. 

Trey Scott: Defenseman, Lunenburg, Mass.

After one season with the Omaha Lancers in the USHL, Scott enters his freshman campaign at UConn. The 5’10 defenseman appeared in 29 games total and scored two goals with six assists for eight points. Before the Lancers, Scott spent some time with the NAHL with the Maryland Black Bears and the USHL with the Youngstown Phantoms for the 2022-23 season. During that year, Scott appeared in 47 total games, scoring six goals and 22 assists for 28 points.  

Filip Sitar: Forward, Ljubljana, Slovenia

After time with the Malmo RedHawks, Sitar came to UConn. The 5’11 Forward appeared in 40 games for the RedHawks. He scored 25 goals with 35 assists for a total of 50 points. Sitar additionally represented Slovenia in the international competition where in the span of eight games, he scored five goals with five assists for 10 points.  

Mike Murtagh: Forward, East Greenbush, N.Y. 

Murtagh comes to UConn after a two-year stint in the BCHL with the Nanaimo Clippers. In the 2023-24 season, the 5’11 forward appeared in 53 games total, he scored 27 points with 26 assists for 63 total points. In his two seasons with the Clippers, Murtagh played a role in leading them to the playoffs where he appeared in 15 total games scoring two goals with five assists for seven points.  

Needless to say, the Ice Bus is filled with new faces and talent. The Huskies will showcase their new team for the first time this weekend. UConn will open up their season this Friday, Oct. 5 against Colgate and finish the series on Oct. 6. Both puck drops are set for 7:30 p.m. at Toscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs.
