Global Markets: Canadian trade deficit widens

  • Canada’s international trade deficit widened to C$1.1 billion in August, as imports increased by 0.3 per cent and exports fell by 1.0 per cent, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday. The data included a revision to the July balance, which moved from a C$684 million surplus to a C$287 million deficit.

 

  • Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday. Tampa Bay, in the direct path of the storm, has not seen a major hurricane in more than a century. Officials were also warning of storm surges and widespread flooding.

 

  • Tunisian President Kais Saied was re-elected in a landslide victory Monday, maintaining power with 90.7 per cent of the vote, according to reports. However, turnout was low with only 28.8 per cent of eligible voters participating.
