Rumored Blade Director Addresses Involvement in MCU Movie

Jeymes Samuel will not direct Blade for Marvel Studios. The Book of Clarence filmmaker has debunked a recent report claiming that he had met with Marvel about directing the upcoming superhero reboot.

“I don’t know where these rumors start, but I am not in talks to do Blade with Marvel. I love me the Daywalker tho, I cannot wait to watch that joint,” Samuel wrote on the social media platform X. Reports of the filmmaker being in line to direct Bladeemerged at the end of September 2024. Whoever does end up signing on for Blade will become the third director attached to the long-gestating project, which was announced back at Marvel Studios’ 2019 San Diego Comic-Con panel. Bassim Tariq and Yann Demange were previously attached to direct Blade at one point, but both departed over creative differences in September 2022 and June 2024, respectively.

Following a cryptic social media post by Shang-Chi star Simu Liu, Marvel fans believe the actor is teasing forthcoming news about the sequel.

Samuel debunking his portion of World of Reel’s Blade report calls into validity the rest of the report, which additionally stated that the latest draft of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie’s screenplay, penned by Eric Pearson, “might have finally satisfied everyone involved.” Blade has gone through several screenwriters over the past five years, including Stacy Osei-Kuffour (Watchmen), Michael Starrbury (The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete), Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective), and Michael Green (Logan). Pearson is no stranger to the MCU, having done uncredited rewrites on several of the franchise’s movies, as well as penning the shooting scripts for Black Widow, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Two Actors Remain Attached to Blade

Despite reports claiming that Blade could be scrapped, World of Reel reported that the movie remains “a major priority” for Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Mahershala Ali remains attached to star as the titular Marvel Comics character, having been the one to approach Marvel Studios about starring in a new Blade movie. At this time, the only other actor attached to the Blade reboot is Mia Goth, who joined the project back in April 2023. While the studio never announced who the actor was playing in the MCU movie, insider Daniel Richtman reported that she had been cast as the vampire Lilith, who was the daughter of Dracula in Marvel Comics.

With Blade undergoing multiple rewrites since Goth’s casting, it’s unclear if the character the actor is playing is still Lilith. However, despite the production troubles, Goth is excited to join the MCU, revealing in June 2024 that Marvel Studios does “really care” about making “a great movie. That’s the sense that I get from them and that feels good.”

Moon Knight Season 2 Gets Promising Update

At one point, Blade was reportedly planned to tie into a Midnight Sons project. While that is likely no longer the case given that this was reported before Pearson took over screenwriting duties, a Midnight Sons project remains a strong possibility, especially with the MCU introducing multiple supernatural characters since the start of Phase 4. Oscar Isaac, who portrays the MCU’s Moon Knight, has already expressed interest in appearing in such a crossover, noting in February 2024 that Midnight Sons provides an “interesting opportunity to see him [Moon Knight] as part of a team and what that dynamic would be.” Moon Knight’s MCU future recently received a promising update, with insider Alex Perez revealing that Marvel has “an idea” for Moon Knight Season 2 that they find “really exciting.”

At the time of writing, Blade is still set to hit theaters on Nov. 7, 2025, as part of Phase 6 of the MCU.
