Kurt Angle’s Biopic Movie Won’t Cover His Pro Wrestling Career

Key Takeaways

  • Kurt Angle has shared more details about the movie based on his life that’s in the works.
  • The script is complete, and it doesn’t cover anything from Angle’s pro wrestling career.
  • The biopic will detail Angle’s upbringing and his gold medal win at the 1996 Olympic Games.

Almost a whole year has passed since Kurt Angle revealed work had begun on a biopic about his life. At the time, Angle noted that those behind the movie hoped filming would begin in 2024. While that doesn’t seem to have happened yet, the former WWE Superstar has revealed new details about the movie, confirming that the script is complete and that the film will not cover his time as a professional wrestler.

Kurt Angle’s Biopic Won’t Include His Time As A Professional Wrestler

Angle spoke with Danielle McCartan on WFAN this week, explaining that the movie will retell Angle’s story of growing up in Pittsburgh and going on to win Olympic gold at the Atlanta game in 1996 (H/T to Fightful for the transcription).

It’s about a kid from the streets of Pittsburgh who overcomes all these obstacles, including a broken neck, to win the Olympic gold medal. It’s only about my Olympic career, it’s not about my pro wrestling career.

Angle’s Olympic story is a pretty incredible one and, if told right, will make a fantastic movie. Moving up through the ranks to not only win a gold medal but to do it while his neck was broken. Angle noted that the directors attached to the project want the movie to have a Rocky feel with elements of The Iron Claw and The Fighter mixed in. The film ending with Angle standing tall as an Olympic champion would certainly have a Rocky feel.

What The Movie Will Be Missing By Ending In 1996

All of that said, pro wrestling fans will likely be disappointed to find out nothing of Angle’s career after he won his gold medal will be a part of the movie. Some might argue the parts of Angle’s life that would lend themselves better to a movie happened after he transitioned from amateur wrestling to pro wrestling. The visit to ECW that put him off pro wrestling before it had even started, his legendary start in WWE, and his dark battle with an addiction to painkillers.

The decision appears to have been made and Angle explained that now the script is complete, those attached to the biopic are now pitching it to studios. Once they have a taker, casting can begin, something fans have already started doing on the Angle biopic team’s behalf. One of the favorites among fans appears to be Matt Damon, although he might have his hands full with the film about Hulk Hogan’s Gawker trial he and Ben Affleck are trying to get off the ground.
