Delhi University has outlined an ambitious series of initiatives, including plans to launch its own satellite, shift to electric vehicles on campus, and introduce a free lunch program for students. These goals are part of the university’s Institutional Development Plan (IDP) 2024, a roadmap that lays out the long-term objectives DU aims to achieve.

One key goal is the creation of a DU satellite system, which could significantly contribute to scientific research, telecommunications, GPS navigation and remote education. The IDP notes that if funding becomes a hurdle, the university may seek assistance from organisations like ISRO to bring this vision to life.

In pursuit of environmental sustainability, DU plans to reach a zero-emission target by gradually phasing out fossil fuel vehicles and introducing electric vehicles on campus. The initial rollout will focus on areas such as Chhatra Marg, promoting a cleaner, greener environment for students and staff.

The feasibility and specifics of these projects will be determined as they are rolled out.

Another major initiative is the launch of a free working lunch program for underprivileged students. In exchange for work, students will receive free meals in the university’s cafeteria, which will adhere to strict food safety standards. The university plans to collaborate with self-help groups for food procurement, supporting local communities in the process.

Additionally, DU plans to create a “University Haat,” a commercial shopping space where student-led startups can display and sell their products. With a student population of nearly six lakh, the university sees this as a significant market opportunity.

The IDP also includes proposals for a ‘University Alumni Angel Network’ where successful alumni can mentor and fund student startups, and the establishment of a special Chair for multinational companies to promote university research. Reverse internships, where students hire industry professionals, are also part of this vision.

These proposals were presented to the Academic Council for consideration in a meeting held on Thursday.
