Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman heads to Mexico and US for key economic meetings

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to embark on a key official visit to Mexico and the US from October 17 to 26, 2024. The visits are expected to focus on enhancing bilateral trade relations, promoting India as a global investment hub, and participating in crucial multilateral economic discussions.

This visit comes at a time when India is actively seeking to strengthen its economic ties with global partners and position itself as a significant player in the global financial landscape.

In Mexico, the Finance Minister will lead an Indian delegation in Guadalajara, where she will chair a Tech Leaders Roundtable, bringing together Indian and Mexican tech giants.

Guadalajara, often referred to as Mexico’s ‘Silicon Valley,’ is home to many global IT firms, and Sitharaman’s engagements are expected to further bolster India’s presence in the region’s tech ecosystem.

She will also meet her Mexican counterpart, H.E. Rogelio Ramirez de la O, to discuss avenues for expanding bilateral economic cooperation and visit Tata Consultancy Services’ headquarters in the city.

Moving to Mexico City, Sitharaman will deliver a keynote at the India-Mexico Trade and Investment Summit, focusing on enhancing trade ties between the two nations.

This event will feature business leaders from both countries and will showcase India’s policy priorities aimed at attracting foreign investment.

The visit will culminate in a community event with the Indian diaspora, a key pillar of India’s soft diplomacy in Mexico.

Following her engagements in Mexico, Sitharaman will travel to the US, where she will attend the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington D.C.

She is also scheduled to take part in the 4th G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meetings, as well as the G7-Africa Ministerial Roundtable.

These discussions are expected to address critical global economic issues such as sustainable development, climate finance, and strategies for global economic recovery post-pandemic.

In New York, Sitharaman will attend a Pension Funds Roundtable at the New York Stock Exchange, where she will engage with leading investors to highlight India’s investment opportunities.

She will also address students and faculty at the Wharton School of Business and Columbia University, discussing India’s economic trajectory and its growing role in global finance.

Bilateral meetings with leaders from the UK, Switzerland, Germany, and heads of financial institutions such as the World Bank, ADB, and EBRD are also scheduled.
