Indianapolis Symphony’s new free series will explore music’s backstory

A new free concert series will explore the stories behind the works the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra performs on stage.

Called “Into the Music,” each show will include a discussion of a specific work before the symphony performs it, according to a news release from the orchestra. Indy Now co-host Ryan Ahlwardt, a Straight No Chaser alum, will join Maestro Jun Märkl to talk about the backstories of the composers and their works.

The series is a new initiative by Märkl, whom the symphony announced as its new music director in January.

“‘Into the Music’ is a wonderful opportunity to connect with classical music and learn more about some of the greatest pieces written for orchestra,” Märkl stated in the release. “The ISO invites our community to join us for an informative discussion in a casual setting. Relax, enjoy, and come back for the full performance on Friday or Saturday!”
